Willow had always had a slight crush on Angel but she had always known that it would never go anywhere. Angel had always belonged to Buffy in some bizarre way that Willow couldn’t really define but it didn’t stop her from dreaming. And in her dreams, Angel had always turned towards and looked at her as if he had never truly seen her before.
For a moment, it almost seems as if her dreams are coming true. Angel has turned towards her body, his fingers are gentle as he caresses her face, and her heart is racing in her chest. It seems so impossible that Angel could actually be touching her or even seen her for who she is rather than just as Buffy’s sidekick.
Just when Willow thinks that maybe, just maybe, Angel actually might like her; he becomes a monster in the blink of an eye. His touch goes from gentle and sweet to cruel and violent. And it becomes all about Buffy again.
The fact that she’ll never be seen for who she is, not when Buffy is there (or really any other pretty girl), shakes Willow up more than the fact that Angelus is using her to torment Buffy with. Her self value sinks even lower as he taunts her because she knows that he’s only whispering the filthy things in ear because he knows later on, Willow will cry on Buffy’s shoulder.
It’s not about her and it’ll never be. Perhaps she’s better off dreaming.
