She hasn’t seen him in a year, not since they were both on this stage a year ago. She’s been grateful for his absence in her life, yet a year later she spies him in the crowd while she takes the stage. It’s hard to miss him because of his intensity and it almost throws her off of her performance. Almost she’s far too professional and invested in winning this year to let anyone, including him¸ throw her off of her game.
Afterwards New Directions leaves the stage, he somehow manages to find her backstage during the third team’s performance. She waits for him to break the silence, her lips firmly pressed together and her arms folded against her chest as she refuses to make eye contact.
“Rachel.”
Her name falls off his lips yet she won’t respond. She doesn’t want to fall for his sweet lies again. He gently runs his thumb along her lips and it sends shivers down her spine. Still she refuses to give him anything.
“You were amazing.”
“What do you want St James?”
He shrugs in response and she can only hope that he’s finally realized that she doesn’t want anything to do him, not now, not ever. (Even though deep down, she really does.) He shoves his hands in his pockets and walks away from her.
Later on when the three teams are back on the stage awaiting to find out who won, Rachel refuses to look for him, even if there’s a part of her that desperately needs to know if he’s there waiting in the crowd to see if she’s won. The fear that he isn’t there, holds her back, because somehow it’d be worse if he had just left. (Even if that’s what she wanted.)
