I guess I am confused - what was the context of this? (Or was there one? ) Was there an attempt (ill conceived) present this article and the debate that followed as a logical argument, or was it just about the reality of mental illness? (it seems like the whole thing got off the whole track anyway - whether or not the state can force people into treatment has more to do with the concerns of potential for harm then the reality and causes of it)

Either way, it might be worth asking for a meeting with the professor and the department chair to discuss how this, even as an academic exercise, was demeaning and insulting to those that do suffer from any mental illness or really, care about those who do.

Um, does this (idiot) teacher have a degree in medicine? Because if he doesn't, he has no right or authority to "diagnose" you or even have this so-called "debate about what is construed as an illness and what isn't.

I'm with the group that suggests to report him.

If you'd like to read a well-reasoned arguement try this:
a href="http://www.schlockmercenary.com/blog/epub-selfpub-venn">a misleading venn diagram (the comments are interesting too)
and then the response from someone else:
we need a gripping hand (with not as many comments)
