you know.. i really, seriously, thought this was a LOGIC class, not an Ethics and modern society/sociology class. funny its LISTED as a logic class on my syllabus..... ( Read more... )
Debate in general has to do with creating logical arguments, but this kind of debate where he is insisting on what is true/false/right/wrong without any kind of rational or logical argument has nothing to do with logic, and I'd take this up with the dean...
BTW, you could get him by stating that he's setting up a false dichotomy which is a logical fallacy...
Hmm...I can sort of see where he is coming from. I don't think he's trying to totally discredit mental/behavioral disorders but make a point that they often times don't have physical tests like tumors. There is not a blood test for ADHD or aspergers even though there are chemical treatments for them. Brain scans will pick up depression or schizophrenia but only in some cases and sometimes, only under certain conditions. Again, the diagnosis for those conditions are first done by behavioral observations. Then again, signs for brain tumors are often first diagnosed with behavioral observations.
The logic part of the class is that he's setting up an argument and defending it using logic. You need to attack his base argument of his definition of "illness". What is the difference between an "illness" and a "problem with living"? If you could diagnose depression or other mental illnesses with the same tests used for brain tumors, would they then be considered "illnesses"?
Apparently loads of people only discover they have (benign) brain tumours when they get a scan done as "healthy" participants in Psychology tests

Imagine the self-hatred he must feel every time he doesn't live up to his own standards of mental health.
