This is about Pern MUSHes, for my sweet and innocent friends who are trying one and might not have realised the potential pitfalls.

Cut for the disinterested... )

Eeeek! Now I'm scared! I'd heard all this stuff about Pern MU*s, but I decided to look because of the others and people were being so nice...here's hoping it has changed.

Yes. That is the rub about Pern Games. I'm hopping I finally have a PC Impress, I'm really not counting on it. However, they do seem to like my 6 foot tall, 200lb Tanner, so ;p.

...And this isn't endemic to roleplaying in ALL it's forms?

It seems that most people who roleplay dwell on their own inadequacies (spelling?) rather than their strengths, and seek an outlet in roleplay where they can be admired by all for the god-like character they aspire to become. There are precious few who would promote the 'story' above their own characters well-being. I suppose in the end it comes down to the tetrahedron of roleplay, with popcorn eaters, powergamers, and wannabes on the base, and true roleplayers at the apex?

...So saying, I suppose voicing these thoughts makes me elitist, snobby and cliquish? *grin*

Elitist, snobby and cliqueish? Yup.

But those things can be good as well as bad. Cliques are cool, it's the impenetrable cliques that hurt the game. Elitism? If it means that everybody at the game is a competent roleplayer and you don't have to struggle with someone who things 'I killz U hur hur hur' is outstanding RP, it's a good thing.

I have powergaming tendancies as we both know, but I can, will and do do stuff for the story above my characters. If I'm having fun but no-one else is, something is very wrong.

I agree. I _know_ it's cliche, but the needs of the many outweigh the needs of the few (or the one!).

And if by example, another person can be converted to the true path, a character death will not have been in vane...
