Nature of the Beast

This is about Pern MUSHes, for my sweet and innocent friends who are trying one and might not have realised the potential pitfalls.

Elitist. Cliquish. Snobby. Full of people who either think they're wonderful or are bitter about those who do.

That's the nature of the PernMUSH. In a setting where so very few can aspire to greatness, it's not too surprising that MUSHes get built around those who make it and their friends. Politicking, backbiting, snobbery and other such generally distasteful behaviours are rife, because when the wrong people are in charge of a game where the people who are going to be in charge next are going to be handpicked by those wrong people, the only way to get any sort of IC power is to get it by way of OOC favouritism.

And when you add in the fact that there are far, far more wrong people than right people, the newcomer with no friends in high places is screwed. It unfortunately appears to be the very nature of the Pern setting that does it - though any good idea for a MUSH can go sour, I've only heard of one where it's run for the players as a whole rather than for those who sit atop a Gold to get worship and adoration from their paeons.

I've got no recent information on the game we're on now. I know it was bad a while back; now, I'm not sure.

To me, you guys are there and the RP is fun. Those are the important things. For that, I can cope with a hell of a lot that I'd never put up with on my own. :)
