Previous story:
Beginning of the End Lisa had heard the uncharacteristic yell of her coworker and peered into the break room. Hugh glanced over at her from his close position to Robert and she cautiously approached when he didn’t wave her away, taking in the shaking hands and near-strangulation of his cell as he tried to push buttons. “Is everything okay?”
“Robert you dog!” Jesse’s too-loud voice boomed in the silence as he entered the room, interrupting Hugh as he started to speak and causing Robert’s fingers to still.
Robert stopped dialing and turned around. “What are you talking about?”
“You and the new bird.”
“There is no new bird.” Confusion was plain on his face.
“Well, according to,” he looked down at the tabloid, “Kat Williams, and I quote: ‘Robert and I have been dating for only a few weeks, but we have this deep connection, we are very much in love.’”
Now it was Robert’s turn to be blind-sided by the very same news that must have set Alan off. He looked at Jesse in disbelief. “Give me that.” He snatched the paper away from Jesse, whose smile was slowly fading.
Lisa looked at the paper over one shoulder while Hugh took the opposite. Two pictures caught her eye. One of Robert leading a young lady off to a quiet corner, and another of him and the same lady, lips locked in a tender-looking kiss. Lisa looked at Hugh, but he was too busy trying to read the article underneath the pictures, which was no easy task the way they rippled under Robert’s hands.
Jesse realized that the trio in front of him was engrossed in the article, none looking happy. He shrugged before grabbing a cookie from the craft services table and making his exit.
“At least people won’t doubt your masculinity now. No more gay rumors,” Hugh stated softly.
“Only problem: Alan thinks I betrayed him. He just broke up with me!” Robert swallowed back his panic as the words hit home.
“He didn’t know about her?” Lisa asked, surprised by the news of the breakup.
“There. Is. No. Her. We have mutual friends and I ran into her a few times. She seemed like a nice levelheaded girl. On the night of the premiere, she happened to spot me as she was walking by. It was just a coincidence. She asked if I was seeing anyone and I said no.”
“And the kiss?” He gestured to the paper still clenched in Robert’s fist.
“She…was friendly.” He shrugged, the words sounding less than stellar to his own ears.
“I think you’re fucked. You had better find a way to get rid of her. Unless you like these little articles to pop up and bite you in the arse.”
“I need to talk to Alan,” Robert said in a rush, looking down at the forgotten phone in his hand.
“They need you on set, better make it fast.” Hugh clapped Robert gently on the shoulder and hurried off, leaving him alone with Lisa.
Lisa placed a hand on Robert’s arm and squeezed gently, waiting for him to stop looking at the phone like it was a dead pet and to raise his eyes to meet hers. “What are you doing tonight?” she asked, once she had eye contact.
He shrugged.
“Want to come over to my place for dinner?”
Robert breathed out a laugh. “Sure the paparazzi would just love that.”
“Which is why we will stay in. I will even draw down the blinds if you wish. And,” she added, “I wont take ‘no’ for an answer.”
Robert gave her a weak smile, biting the side of his lip. “Well then I will have to say yes.”
Lisa realized that she still had a grip on Robert’s arm, so she let her hand slide off. “I’ll see you sometime after work then. Drop by anytime.” She started to walk away, then stepped back and pulled him into a quick hug before hurrying back.
Robert took a deep breath and dialed Alan’s number. He listened to the rings and waited. The call switched to voice mail. “Alan, please call, we need to talk about this. Give me a chance to explain. Please, Alan, call me back.”
He wiped frustrated tears away from his eyes as he pocketed the phone. Then he picked up his lab coat and slipped it on, trying to convert back into James Wilson, the man who had three ex-wives and only one friend, and put aside the mess he had made of his own life.
