Dawning News

Alan pressed end on the phone and dropped it onto the couch, heavily falling down next to it. He looked down at his hands and was surprised to find that they were shaking. He was mad, confused, betrayed, and still in disbelief. He just ended it all with Robert. He had just shut the door on 18 months of his life in a three-minute conversation. The phone started to ring and he knew it was Robert. He had the urge to pick up, but didn’t want to listen to more lies designed to urge him to believe in them again.

Instead he stood, angrily stalking around his hotel room with all the ferocity of a caged lion. He paused in front of his computer screen, hands clenched into fists, staring at the paparazzi picture of Robert with his lips pressed tightly against another woman’s. A pretty blonde woman’s. He turned away, trying to keep in the tears that were pressing behind his eyes and welling up at the corners.

He felt betrayed and hurt. He had fallen for Robert and wanted to make their relationship something permanent, but with each inch he pushed forwards, Robert seemed to pull that much farther away. Alan knew that Robert was hesitant to commit to anything, but he thought that they had been taking things slow enough. Alan was emotionally kicking himself for pushing so hard over the last two months. He had finally asked Robert to consider the idea of them living together and that just seemed to propel him into the arms of another. Alan grabbed the nearest thing, a glass pitcher, and tossed at the far wall, not flinching from the loud shattering of glass exploding and tinkling to the ground. It gave him a brief release from the anger he felt towards Robert for the betrayal. And towards himself for pushing the man he loved away.

He quickly walked towards the door, ignoring the mess, grabbing his coat and keys as he went. Just as he was leaving the room, the phone started to ring again and he closed the door on the sound. He could still faintly hear the ring as he pressed his back up against the wood. He stretched his arms over his head and reassured himself that things would get better. Things would be better. A walk was a good start. He would prove to himself that he was still alive, no matter how dead he felt inside.
