Yes, in Austria the lakes near Salzburg: Attersee, Mondsee etc. are really beautiful. Turquoise water like you've never seen before, snowy mountans in the background, pure green of the grass... it's really a piece of heaven. Plus, it's the area where "The Sound of Music" was filmed.

Send me a postcard? ;)

While I LOVED Salzburg, Innsbruck was my favorite. It's a nice little town and they have a zoo on top of a mountain. Its a gorgeous place.

I didnt really like Vienna too much.

Also it germany check out Koblenz and Cologne.

I stayed in Europe for 3 months. Compared to the other big cities Vienna just doesnt match up. I thought it was quite harsh on the eye.

To each his own, I guess. I loved Vienna and want to live there someday. Sorry to hear you all disliked it so much. What time of year were you there?

Never been in summer, but skiing in Lech/Arlberg/Zuerss (Austria) is unbelievable. The summer photos and winter terrain were good enough to draw me back this summer to try some hiking. I also really liked some crazy saltmine tour I did in Halsberg (spelling?) near Salzburg if the deep alps are too out of the way.

For reasonably quiet but not too obscure in Germany I've always be a Konstanz (Constance in English?) fan. It is on one of Europes largest lakes (head of Rhein river) on the Swiss border. Munich, though a big city (which doesn't feel like it and is much friendlier than Berlin) has great stuff nearby (e.g. everyone should see one or two of Crazy Ludwig's castles just to believe it, and Earth's best beer can be found at the Andechs monestary atop a holy "mountain" outside Munich).

Oberammergau is a beautiful little quiet town in Germany (in the region of Bavaria, really). It's a mountain town, right near Garmisch (if you ski, I'd highly recommend it... I don't ski and it was still beautiful). There are some fantastic castles in the area and you can hike/ride to the top ov the Zugspitz (the highest peak of the German Alps).
