I saw the Rankin-Bass version of The Hobbit as a kid; that lead to the novel; and now we have the above to look forward to. Smaug was THE dragon as I grew up and I am so looking forward to finally hearing his voice!

When I was little, my dad read me all the books as a bedtime story (actually, I think we didn't finish the last one).

I wasn't too happy with the Rankin Bass version, and I think their LOTR coming out on TV was why there was never a second half of the Ralph Bakshi one.

I like the R-B version mainly because it was my introduction to Tolkien and along with the original Conan movie my introduction to fantasy -- and history, and mythology, and a whole lot else.

Same here. And right now I'm watching The Hobbit on DVD, the scene with the dwarves and the trolls. "We're riddled with parasites!"
