One tight-arsed old gnat to another, hon. I agree with you fully. Child rape and abuse is not entertainment or a harmless kink. These kids NEVER recover. EVER. It leads to anorexia, drug abuse, alcoholism, unhealthy life choices, lack of self esteem and suicide. Their lives are destroyed. But I suppose shallow gits who likely have never had to suffer such things and yet still yell "OMG LIEK I SO TOTALLY WAS ABUSED SO I CN WRITES DIS!" as a means of justifying their spilling of literary bile are too stupid to understand that.

Eh, it's the same discussion every year. Almost like "Dinner for One" on New Year's Eve. Freedom of Speech is always "the other side has to shut up and take a chill pill". It's also interesting how it's always assumed that US law is applicable in every other country on this planet. Fanfic of that type WOULD be illegal here and could get you in court.

Here too hon. We tossed a teacher in jail for saying the holocaust never happened. I think the Americans need to sit back and re-examine their freedom of speech laws.

I really hate the way people like us are described as idiots who can't tell fiction from reality and want to take away freedom of speech.

Word. "Freedom of Speech" is my favourite. To me that term has become a synonymous for "permission to be a tosser anywhere and behave like an idiot at any time without consequences, neener!"

Was someone aggressive to you because of your opinions?

Ah no, not this time. I'm not involved with the fandom in question, but every couple of month, the discussion comes up again. And every five years, I comment on it. It's almost like a tradition...

Ah, it's a relief then!

Sorry for the question, but lately a couple of my f-list buddies have been attacked (some actually are being pursued across every community or forum they are in) due their opinions, writing and/or their sexual orientation and I thought you were being attacked too.

*hugs tightly*

Awww. *hugs back* I'm not in communities and forums (fori? Fores? Darn it!), so my "wank level" is relatively low. I'm not a suitable person to attack, either, as I usually don't care. I'm still here, after all. I hope your friends won't take it to their hearts.

There's enough rape and child abuse in the world, we don't need to make it entertainment. But without getting into morals and censorship, you (and I and everyone else) most certainly have the right to avoid people who routinely write stuff that you find disgusting.

Not accepting something as a "kink", but rather considering it to be morally wrong is a big no-no in fandom, and gets you automatically on the "List Of Idiots Who Don't Get It". So people prefer to be hush hush about it - I freely admit I usually don't touch this discussion because I'm tired of the ensuing wank - but that can't really be what freedom of expression is all about.

When something is frowned on universally, it's normally because we know as a species that it's unacceptable. Children + sex = wrong. Sex with an eight year old is ALWAYS rape. Rape is an act of extreme violence. Anyone who trivilaises an act of extreme sexual violence against a child is not the kind of person I need to know, and I am not weak enough or needy enough to feel pressured to approve just because it's fanfiction, not reality. Child rape does happen. It is always, always wrong.

(ETA) Freedom of speech - on my lj profile page I say 'I believe that the price of all freedom must always be personal responsibility.", and I'm standing by that.

That's how I feel as well. And it annoys me how those who find pleasure in the combination of kids + sex so vocally insist that it's their damned right to like it, while at the same time telling those who disagree to "take a chill pill" or "don't like it, don't read it". This is not a case of "I don't like your kink" - to me, it's not a kink, it's an aspect of a person which worries me, and I don't think I'm the only one.
