Wanted: Small On/Off-Road Motorcycle

     I'm looking for a smallish on/off-road sort of motorcycle for The Teenager.  One that seems to fit the bill nicely is the Honda XL500S, but those bikes are getting pretty old.  On the plus side, that often means they're cheaper, on the minus side it means parts are harder to find.  Does anyone have some suggestions for other bikes that would

Street legal is important (and also can often be retrofitted). The guys behind me often make short jaunts on their not-quite street-legal bike and I saw them pulled over last fall. ...I see them on that bike in the neighborhood less now.
