Initial entry can be seen here
Calvin has been home for almost a month now and he is turning out to be quite the gentleman. He has impeccable ground manners and is a big goof. We have hacked around in the ring and even gone out for a nice trail ride. He was so mellow on the trail I doubted that I bought a 5 year old OTTB! My trainer came out to work ( Read more... )

The pitbull's best friend is actually a cat. That MUST be where he learned it from :D

Would have been neat to see the removal photos. My vets looked at me funny when I videoed and photographed the procedure when my horse had a huge lump of proud flesh removed from his leg. It was insane how much it bled!

I love your dressing with the big heart on it :) He's such a lovely boy and very handsome.
I hope he recovers nicely :)

I know! I was so mad I had left my camera at home. We did the removal in a shower stall and I couldn't believe the amount of blood!
Thank you for the compliments! The vet actually put the heart on it, she is awesome.

Was it thick? My gelding look like he was spewing out ketchup from his leg XD

I had great luck with Equaide keeping the proud flesh away after removing it (and from other open wounds I healed from the inside out) Not sure if you've heard of it or had any experience with it, but worth mentioning :)

Proud flesh really is a bugger and can take a huge amount of time to heal even with good treatment. I'm still dealing with some almost two years down the line. Oh this is on me not a horse, but the issue is the same.

Hopefully Calvin will heal a lot quicker than me.

Ugh, that sounds awful. I'm sorry to hear you've been dealing with an issue for that long. I hope things are getting better for you.
And I sure hope Calvin heals up in less then two years!

We've used this Vetericyn Wound Spray on some pretty ghastly punctures and lacerations where I work. It doesn't look like much, but with cold hosing and applying that twice a day, and I swear the wounds healed twice as fast as any other treatment a vet has given me (proud flesh ointments, sweats, etc.). The link says it's like $35, but I found it at my local co-op for about half that. It's pretty good stuff :)
