YAY Another NYC rider!! I'm an adult "re-beginner" (or "reginner as I've coined recently!). Rode a bit as a kid, now in my early 30s and basically starting over. But I've come pretty far in a few months, at least by my standard ( ... )

i zip it in jersey (I live in downtown Jersey City for this reason)

I have tried pretty much every barn in the north jersey area, and I have problems with all of them although there are SOME good points to all of them as well. Is it okay if I message you? I don't want people to think I'm slandering anyone on the internet lol.

Barns I've tried within driving distance in the city:

Essex Equestrian Center
North Jersey Equestrian Center
Garrett Mountain (Equestrian Center...? I think? lol)
Bergen County (Eq center.. can't we have a FARM or ACRES or SOMETHING??)

Bergen is closed right now as far as I know. They were 'renovating' and ran out of money. OF course.

I feel like it's a fact of life as a city dweller, the riding is going to be sh*tty. I'm doing the best I can for now and planning on moving the heck out of here when I can.

oh also I haven't tried this place, but there is a barn in westchester called Twin Lakes Farm? www.twinlakesfarm.com

Maybe worth a shot. It's too far for me.

My aunt lives across the street from Rockleigh. Gorgeous, yes - but I heard their waiting list is ridiculous and that their prices were, too. I spent some time at my aunt's over one summer and wanted to take a lesson for fun and to say they were not very helpful is the grossest understatement ever. They told me there was a wait list super long and couldn't even get me in for a half hour at some point. I know they regularly shoot movie scenes there and will lease/rent the facilities for photo and video shoots if someone wants it and that's about everything I know!

I know some people who board at Rockleigh and seem to like it (i.e. we're facebook friends and don't actually talk, so I don't have the whole skinny). At least, they've been there for several years, and have talked other people into joining them there - I think it's a safe assumption that they're reasonably happy.

No indoor in NJ SUCKS, though, and we're going into the time of year that they're really necessary. Their other facilities are nice, but nothing special. I also don't think it'd be worth a waiting list when there are other options that don't have one.

I don't think it'd hurt to stay on said waiting list - just look at other barns in the meantime. If you haven't found something you're totally happy with when you get off it, then go take a lesson there. How far into Jersey are you willing to travel?

I think my max is going to be around an hour? And that's only because I'll be paying for a zip car by the hour on top of my lesson fees...so I think an hour is about as far as I can go, unfortunately. I'd like it to be closer, if possible, but I'm willing to travel.

This will be my first WINTER riding. I grew up/trained in Georgia in my competition days, so winters down there were like...early fall up here.
