Hi everyone!

My paint-draft cross, Indy, is a bay/white colour, and one side of his barrel is completely white. He also has a white star & strip/snip, and four white socks. ( Here's a picture of him, if you'd like to see what it looks like. )

Dumb question, but can you turn him out at night?

He's on 24 hour turnout, except for breakfast/dinner/inclement weather. I'd prefer to keep him out as much as possible because if he doesn't get enough grass (which is sparse enough right now anyway) he gets severe diarrhea.

My mom has a pink skinned App mare, and she used to put WaterBabies on her nose for daytime turnout. Vet recommended because its made for sensitive skin. I am not to sure about it being licked off, but I know her horse was a licker too and after one or 2 licks, she decided it wasn't yummy and quit. It worked wonders for her nose ears and other "thinner haired" body parts!

Great! I'll definitely try that, then, since I use Water Babies myself. We can share :)

I agree with this - my gelding's blaze goes all the way down his nose and bottom lip, and always gets sunburned. I just rub some waterproof sunscreen on the pink-skinned parts and it really helps. I use SPF-100 on myself, and put some on him while I have it out. :)

Edit, I typed "has" and I meant "had", sadly, Hope passed away 5 years ago at the age of 38. My fingers were typing before my brain could think!

Awww, I'm sorry :( But goodness, 38. That's a very impressive age!

The fly spray with sunscreen absolutely works. I like this one: http://www.smartpakequine.com/ProductClass.aspx?productclassid=3430

Awesome, thanks! I'll have to try it out--does it really last for a week? Even if it doesn't, it looks like it'll work well. Thanks!

I'm not sure. The guy who turns out horses where I board just gives them a spritz before each turnout, usually daily unless the weather is total crap. A bottle lasted several months.

Really? I am shocked as that product I have tried a couple times and it didn't keep ANY flies away at all. You are lucky it works where you are. The only things I can get to work at all are Absorbine Ultra Shield (I think that is the name, quite sure) and Endure. I do think one of htem has the sunscreen as well but I know the Endure does not. They are both sweat resistant and claim once you use them a few times you only need to apply once every 17 days but that is bull of course. But it does work at least. IT is a few dollars more than the Equisect, that is why I tried the Equisect but jeez, it did nothing here. And I go through a bottle every 10 days.I buy it by the gallon whenever I can afford to. IF I don't put it on that often they are out there stomping, switching tails and miserable.

Bag Balm works excellent to prevent sunburn. You wouldn't want to slather it all over his barrel likely though it would work very well on the nose. Never, ever had a cow come in with a sunburnt bag using it and it is available anywhere.

Oooh, I'll definitely try that! I know bag balm is less expensive, and probably doesn't taste as nasty if he licks it. Thanks!
