rescue remedy

I am thinking about trying Rescue Remedy on my gelding to quell his severe separation anxiety. Mostly it's because I am tired of being dragged back to the barn every time we go out alone, and that's just on foot. He's dangerous to try to ride out alone because he will literally try everything in his power to get back home.

He never used to care if ( Read more... )

I used Mare Magic on my gelding for this very same reason and it helped a bit. The histrionics only ended after the mare moved to a new barn. Is there any way you could give him a gelding as a pasture pal? They bond, but not quite like mares and geldings bond.

p.s. he's GORGEOUS!

Is mare magic the same kind of thing?

Unfortunately it's just him and the mare at the barn. It's a very small backyard barn with one huge field so I can't separate them. The only separate enclosure is a pen where the resident sheep lives, but it's very flimsy fencing and I think the horses would destroy it in about 3 seconds :P

Yes, we used to use it on a horse that was a nervous traveller, it does seem to work well.
I also use it for my dog on fireworks night.

Is his behaviour indicative of a horse with a magnesium deficiency?

I would say not necessarily, but you should try it-it is cheap and harmless. Soils have become deficient in many minerals. You can also play around with the dosage of Mg a lot. Oh, but Mg needs to be absorbed with Ca and fat, so I would mix it in with some oil.

yes/no. horses with magnesium deficiency DO tend towards being high strung and skittish.

I used Rescue Remedy when my mare was lame. Didn't cure the lameness but it helped with her boxrest crankiness. She lapped it out of my hand.

... why would you think Rescue Remedy would cure lameness?

I don't think she meant she thought it would cure the lameness, but rather, she was saying, "of course, it didn't have any effect on the lameness - I wasn't using it while she was lame to address that issue, but rather the issue of her being bonkers while cooped up in a stall." :) That's how I read it, anyway.

Rescue remedy is good but it won't cure herd bound horses. Having had one, it's a HARD situation. Maybe it'll help relax him ...
He's very pretty.

He makes it very hard to enjoy his company when he's tossing me around like a rag doll, that's for sure!

I feel bad for him, though. He clearly thinks his world is crashing down around him lol.
