rescue remedy

I am thinking about trying Rescue Remedy on my gelding to quell his severe separation anxiety. Mostly it's because I am tired of being dragged back to the barn every time we go out alone, and that's just on foot. He's dangerous to try to ride out alone because he will literally try everything in his power to get back home.

He never used to care if ( Read more... )

Is his behaviour indicative of a horse with a magnesium deficiency?

I would say not necessarily, but you should try it-it is cheap and harmless. Soils have become deficient in many minerals. You can also play around with the dosage of Mg a lot. Oh, but Mg needs to be absorbed with Ca and fat, so I would mix it in with some oil.

yes/no. horses with magnesium deficiency DO tend towards being high strung and skittish.

I wouldn't really call him high strung and skittish, though. He's very happy go lucky as long as he's with another horse. If he's in the field with Glory we can jump on him bareback with no halter and ride him around and this is no issue for him. It's only when he's alone that he turns into a 1200lb fire-breathing idiot.

Edited to say this isn't to discount what you're saying and I will talk to Jen about putting him on a supplement. If it's cheap and noninvasive that's awesome :D

I can attest that Mg/Ca works well with humans, at least. I used to use it for sleeplessness and anxiety and it would make me incredibly calm. The downside was it also took away my energy and I was tired a lot :) But, as far as natural calmers go, Mg/Ca is really good. However, it doesn't work for everyone, so you may have to try other things, as well.

Maybe it would be good for him to have a bit less energy hehe. I will give it a try, thanks a lot :)
