Hyperspace-Warp Jump Points...?

Moment of truth time...one thing I haven't done yet for the Kaniraverse is come up with how space travel--how FTL space travel--actually works. And I kinna need to for the next page I'm doin'.

I mean, okay...space travel in a Space Opera is kind of a MacGuffin; s'long as they can get from Point A to Point B without relativistic effects or having ( Read more... )

There are basically only 3 types of FTL travel: Jump, Shortcut, and Warp. Jump is just a form of teleportation. Shortcut involves leaving normal space for a back way through; and typically involved hyperspace or wormholes. Warp is just simply ignoring relativity and going very fast.

The TV Tropes FTL page is a good resource for the various ways that FTL travel has been done.

BTW, I don't think MacGuffin is the word you want, since that's more of a motivational device. I think the term you're looking for is "Phlebotinum".

Naw, I'm goin' with MacGuffin...cuz HOW many times did the warp core go all flooey on Star Trek, thus driving the plot of the episode? More than once, that's for sure. I can certainly think of an episode or two where they ended up in some remote part of the universe, thus having a wacky adventure where they need parts or fuel or something to get back home...
That's likely to come up at some point in Kanira Baxter as well.

Your TV Tropes link is a 404, alas.

Yeah, actually, I'd figured it out a little while ago; somehow my LJ had gotten attached to your linkium. Extracting that out did the trick. :)

I think...given the Trek-response goal of Kanira Baxter, I'm gonna have to do a form of warp...now if I can just figure out what to call it. "Hyper-warp", "Warp-boost", "Hyper-boost", etc...

Hell, I'm half tempted to get that random word generator software I used to have and actually make a technobabble generator with it. It wouldn't be hard...you can put words in just as easily as letters, and so you can randomly mix'n'match between "Hyper-", "Mega-", "Ultra-", "Super-", "Quantum-", etc, with "-warp", "-flux", "-generator", etc, and come up with some seriously dopey technobble if you really wanted... ;)

Given that there'z more than a little Star Wars in the Kaniraverse as well as Trek, "Hyper-warp"--a combination of the major drive systems of both series--might be the way to go...

The game Command & Conquer 3 used the term "neo-relativistic speeds" to describe a (very) fast incoming alien craft, and I kinda liked the sound of it. I know it's not exactly what you were looking for, but I think it's a neat name for FTL speeds.

Well...I'm looking less for a name and more at functionality; what distinguishes FTL travel in the Kaniraverse from other universes?

Somehow have them go back in time and then travel at relativistic speeds. <.<
But that's opening up a whole other can of worms. >.>

*has no idea what to do*

I actually had an interesting idea for using time travel as space travel once.

The basic idea was that there have been time travelers before, but they've all died because they forgot to take something into account: the movement of the universe. Sure, they ended up in 1492 to go say hi to Columbus...but Earth is now over there, and the time machine is in deep space...and, oops, not airtight! *splat*

Once they figure this problem out, they realize that if they can calculate the exact position of a planet or star relative to Earth's current position and build the time machine into a really fast spaceship, they could just travel to a point in time when the planet is nearby and then travel there through normal space...

I'd heard later that someone else had already come up with this, but, dammit, I thought of it on my own! Heh.
