i'm a member of feminist and there has been a recent posting that links to this article. it's been having a good discussion of how these women feel about the idea of menstruation being optional. there was a lot of backlash against the article, which states that menstruation is an incovenience that women shouldn't have to have ( Read more... )

I menstruate, and given the choice to menstruate or not, I would still choose to, as it just feels odd to not menstruate. I do, however, appreciate the choice to not menstraute, and were my pain worse, I would likely choose to not menstruate, or at least to menstruate infrequently.

See, I've had pretty much this same experience. The longer I went without menstruating, the worse the "accrued" symptoms seem to have gotten; the bloating, discomfort, acne, etc. So although I really dislike menstruating, it seems like if I don't do it, my body just throws a temper tantrum.

Although I hate the shooting pain, the 10-day long pms (how about right now? gah), and everything else, I hate prolonging it and I will do whatever it takes to get my body and me to get along (that phrasing should convey how over having these problems I am, yet, they won't leave).

If none of those repercussions were reality, I'd gladly go without.

If given the option, without side effects, I would choose not to menstruate. My period is painful and debiliatating every month, and it does not make me feel beautiful and natural and womanly. It makes me feel horrible.
I was on Seasonale for 2 years. I never stopped menstruating, and as the above poster mentioned, I felt bloated ALL THE TIME. I couldn't lose weight, my skin was gross, and I had tons of breakthrough bleeding, despite never missing a pill and taking them just as directed everyday.
I have no intentions of having a baby right now (not even dating anyone, let alone ready to start a family) so I don't feel I "need" my period.
Everyone is different though...

I skip periods as a form of pain management. When I'm not on birth control and skipping, my periods almost always land me in the ER. I cramp through to my back and up my spine and bleed like hemorrhaging. It's not something I'm willing to do every month or can even afford. Even with insurance, my ER co-pay is $100, plus meds. I don't have that kind of pocket change laying around. Not to mention all the work I would miss.

If you're not trying to conceive, I really see no point to having a period anyway. I have no idea what a 'normal' period is like, so I guess I can't really speak for women who don't suffer with their periods.

I tried Seasonale and I hated it. I bleed randomly and sometimes for weeks at a time and it made me feel like crap + moody. I'm currently on Nuvaring and it's working really well. I have some 'break through' bleeding here and there. I figure it's my bodys way of saying 'hey, it's time for a period', so I'll take out my ring and let it be. Works for me.
