i'm a member of feminist and there has been a recent posting that links to this article. it's been having a good discussion of how these women feel about the idea of menstruation being optional. there was a lot of backlash against the article, which states that menstruation is an incovenience that women shouldn't have to have ( Read more... )

this is not something that's ever come up in conversation for me.

i'm on the pill continuously for 3 months at a time, since i had a laparotomy in 2003 and my endo was diagnosed. i don't like being on the pill, but it's the lesser of two evils. i would like to have monthly periods, and my period pain is currently not very bad at all and doesn't negatively impact my life, but for now i'll stick with 3 monthly. my doctor thinks this will slow the endo's return and so far she seems to be right. however, my endo was only diagnosed when i had excruciating pain from large cysts, so i'm not sure whether i actually get much pain from endo which is not manifesting as cysts, despite having severe endo. lucky in one way, but not so good if my insides are being mangled by endo and i don't know about it.

we should not have to defend why we don't menstruate - we have a legitimate medical reason not to! it seems to be in our body's interests. and even if it wasn't - no one should have the right to tell any person what they do with their body. who cares if someone doesn't want the hassle of periods. not me!
