i'm a member of feminist and there has been a recent posting that links to this article. it's been having a good discussion of how these women feel about the idea of menstruation being optional. there was a lot of backlash against the article, which states that menstruation is an incovenience that women shouldn't have to have ( Read more... )

i completely agree with you, Kasi, and see both sides to the issue. i have been fortunate enough to be able to control my symptoms (knock on wood) through diet and lifestyle change to the point that i have yet to need to seriously consider taking actions (pill, iud, etc.) that would keep me from menstruating. for me personally, though, i think it would just feel unnatural. i think it's something our bodies are meant to do every month. i also completely understand that my opinion comes out of my experience, and my experience has been that i'm able to control my symptoms via other means ( ... )

I was on uncycled birth control for six months and it was heaven. My pain was completely gone after the second month and didn't come back until I went off the birth control to try to conceive. If it was possible to get pregnant on continual progestrine I woudl be in line for it.

If all information is made available a woman should be able to make an informed decision about her own life and body and not be persecuted for it. That to me is central to feminism.

i hate bleeding. i get so sick during my period, cramps, total (b)itchiness....

right now i do 3 months straight of bc, but i'm thinking of upping it to at least 4, if not 6. i dont want my period again until i'm ready to have kids. which, given my current life situation, wont be for several years.

seasonale was my favorite but it's too expensive right now...but i use generic Portia w/no side effects or breakthrough bleeding (just a bit more depression, but i'm getting that treated as well now)

If there was a way for me to go without the pain without gaining weight (like I did when I went without a period) with no break through bleeding. I'd be all for it. Unfortunatley in my experience so far I have break through bleeding, pain and weight gain instead of just the pain. *sigh*

I was on on Depo for over 3 years, even though much of that time I was not sexually active. I thought it was the best thing in the world. (In hindsight, not so much - because of the health effects it could have caused and the terrible trouble it caused when I decided to have a baby.) If I could find a method to stop menstruation that didn't have any side effects, or whose risks were not too significant, I would never have another period except for when trying to conceive. I missed so much of life - school, work, social events - because of debilitating pain, I would gladly skip that. Aside from the unknown health effects, I can't see a reason NOT to skip periods.
