1001 Books Challenge: UPDATE 32
Here's another one for the list.
Dirk Gently's Holistic Detective Agency by Douglas Adams
I hope what I say next won't cause a riot, but I'm not a big fan of Douglas Adams. That's not to say I hate his work - he has a brilliant turn of phrase and I often LOL at it - but plot-wise he has always left me feeling a bit 'meh'. I've read Hitchhikers and seen the recent film, but I never had any desire to read more (I have a Hitchiker's box set but have enver been arsed to read the rest). I only read this because there is a TV adaption being shown on Thursday and I'm not giving up a lifelong habit of reading the book first just because Adams leaves me a bit cold.
I was actually looking forward to this for another reason - Sci-Fi (more accurately, space stuff with the exception of Doctor Who) is a genre I dislike. A Douglas Adams novel set on terra firma therefore, sounded much more my style of thingy.
Only - yep - five pages in we were dealing with other planets. I groaned.
That's not to say I hated it. As I said before, his turn of phrasing is exceptional and his descriptions are bang on. But at the end of the book I was left feeling let down - the plot itself hadn't tied together as smoothly as I'd hoped.
And although Terry Pratchett is often thought of as a student of Adams, I couldn't help but thing that the same story, in Pratchett's hands, would have been equally as brilliant but much better plotted.
