1001 Books Challenge: UPDATE 30
The Christmas Tree by Julie Salamon
This is technically a children's book or a novella, but I heard good things about it being a future Christmas classic story and so bought it on a whim. My memory recalls I may had heard about it on a Listverse Christmas Book list...
It's a very simple story - the bitter man who organises the NY Christmas tree finds the perfect tree, except that it happens to be an old nun's life-long friend. What follows is a simple tale of friendship as Sister Anthony accepts that the tree that has been with her all her life is old and that it's time to move on.
I wouldn't say it's going to be my favourite Christmas story, but it's a decepticely simple book that packs a real punch towards the end. As an only, and often lonely, child I have a lot of sympathy for Anna (Sister Anthony) befriending the tree - I remember talking to my toys and making imaginary worlds to play in, so it wouldn't be a stretch for someone who has lost everyone to form an attachment to a tree.
And I must say, when Tree is cut down and did get a bit emotional...
