To be honest, it had never occurred to her that she would outlive her husband.
She'd had many a dream where, after a job gone wrong, a solemn Mal would limp back, bloody and ravaged himself from mortal combat, and deliver the news of her brave death to Wash. Strong as he was, she pictured her beloved breaking down sobbing on news of her passing and part of that pleased her - to know that her passion in life was equaled by such passionate grief.
She wasn't ready to be the grieving party.
No one reacts the same to a loss. Tomboy Kaylee blubbered like a little girl. Emotional Simon was steadfast as a rock. Jayne hid in his bunk in denial, probably getting drunk. Mal couldn't seem to look Zoe in the eye. River just settled into Wash's seat and started piloting Serenity as if it had been her job all along.
Zoe didn't know how to feel. The epic sobs didn't come, but the pain did. Moreover the emptiness - that's what hurt the most. There was a void inside where Wash once was and she wore it like an open wound that wouldn't heal. She wouldn't let it.
To heal was to forget and she'd loved too hard and too long to let her man go so easily.
They'd never talked much about beliefs or religion, but Wash had once told her he liked the idea that souls weren't planet-bound despite where they were buried. More than one faith believed souls returned to their birthplace in the stars, becoming part of the universe until they decided to be born again with their loved ones.
So Zoe would take the solo helm from River some quiet nights just to commune with the stars and talk to her husband.
