"Jane! If this is some kind of trick..."

"Try to keep up, Lisbon! Lots of ground to cover!"

Teresa grumbled a few choice words under her breath yet gestured to the state troopers following her to keep up. Their sheriff had fallen under the spell of Patrick Jane so he'd lent her almost his whole squad room of deputies for this wild goose chase to find the supposed Black Tar Killer's burial site.

"How does he walk so fast in those fancy shoes?" One of the troopers asked, cocking his head towards his own shoes. "I'm having trouble keeping up and I've got my good boots on!"

"He's a mystery," Teresa intoned.

"Found it!" Patrick's voice echoed so loudly through the dense forest it wasn't hard to find him standing triumphant over a clearing with seven black tarry mounds. "Anyone got a shovel?" When the deputy closest to him produced a small backpack spade, he directed him. "You can't dig through the tar, it's too hard. Dig a hole next to it and then dig to the side once you're clear of it."

"Let me guess," Teresa said quietly as the troopers got to work. "You spent last night reviewing US government topological satellite photos of the surrounding area?"

"You have your secrets," Patrick said with a sly smile. "I have mine."
