Vid Recs (SGA, BSG, BtVS, Firefly)

Maybe it's just me, but it seems like there haven't been many good X-Files vids posted recently. When I first joined xf_fanfilm, less than a year ago, there were lots of cool things being posted by people like astartexx and xandra_ptv. Now there's a bit of a dearth, which I am hoping that the upcoming movie will remedy. In the mean time, however, there are lots of other ( Read more... )

Actually not a lot of vids are posted at xf_fanfilm. And I'm not sure whether it's because just not a lot of vidders are on LJ or whether the XF vidders are not posting to xf_fanfilm. I've been trying to get the word out there for the community, and I think some people are just missing it. BUT, I've been watching other vidding communities too, i.e. general vidding communities, and no one is posting XF vids there either. SO, it leads me to believe that XF vidders are just not really "here" on LJ? Because I know XF vids ARE posted at Haven, although lately I haven't been there to see what's being posted, and honestly, I haven't watched many vids lately (as in, the last 6 months). I used to be nuts about XF vids, doing vids myself, but now I've sort of lost interest in them, mainly because 90% of the vids I watch are more or less the same shippy vids.

Hmmm, Haven. This is a place at which I haven't registered yet. Having said that, from what I've heard, I'm not surprised that it's the soppy shippy ones that are posted there. Vidding on LJ is very active at the moment, and the XF vids that *have* been posted to xf_fanfilm are the best of the crop, so I think my conclusion is that the really topnotch vidders just aren't focusing on XF anymore. I mean, if I just wanted shipper fluff I could go and look on YouTube. :(

That may be true, but Haven also has several topnotch vidders who do not post their work to Livejournal, and who also do not post to YouTube due to the recent vid removals by YT ( ... )

Perhaps I will finally get around to registering there, then. It's just that there are so many forums to keep track of, and so many passwords to remember! I suppose I shouldn't complain about an embarrassment of riches, really ( ... )

I'm with Fox on this, I rarely see XF vids posted ever, not just at xf_fanfilm. Which makes me sad, being as late to vidding "fandom" as I am, because I feel like I've probably missed out on quite a lot (though going back and looking at your old recs really helps). It also sort of discourages me from the few ideas I have that I want to work on, which doesn't make much sense, as making vids now might help fill the void. Maybe it's the imagined idea of extra pressure to make something good, lol. 'Cause like Fox says, the shipper vids do tend to get pretty redundant.

My hope is that the movie will revive people's interest in doing new projects... I'm just like you in wishing that I had been involved in the fandom back when it was young and vital.

In the mean time, though, I suppose I'm spoiled. I have about 50 XF vids on my hard drive, and almost all of them are worth re-watching. It's good to know that you've found my recs worthwhile. Do you want some more?

Oh... and please, please do try making one yourself! There is a big community out there of vidders, even if not enough of them are XF fans. I for one would love to see what you come up with (I have so many songs that I would like to use myself) and I bet that Fox would too!

Yeah, I hope there's a resurgence too. That'd be really nice to see.

Oh absolutely, if it's not too much trouble! Your recs have all been great, so you obviously have good taste. :)

I'm sure I'll make at least one eventually (though I've got 3-4 ideas gestating at the moment), it's just a matter of getting past the "this is going to suck" mentality and doing it, lol. Sadly, I'm sure I'll be much less motivated to produce a couple of the ideas, as they would be primarily shippy, and such vids tend to get dismissed outright (and often with good reason).

I know what you mean about just doing it. In my case I have just about enough rudimentary technical skill to produce a vid, but I really don't have the patience to spend all that painstaking effort on it. Which is sad. Can I ask what songs you're thinking of using, if that's not too nosy? I have a list of thousands that I'd like to try out if I ever do decide that vidding would be a nice hobby.

And I'll try to post some XF recs later on today...
