Vid Recs (SGA, BSG, BtVS, Firefly)

Nov 26, 2007 17:11

Maybe it's just me, but it seems like there haven't been many good X-Files vids posted recently. When I first joined xf_fanfilm, less than a year ago, there were lots of cool things being posted by people like astartexx and xandra_ptv. Now there's a bit of a dearth, which I am hoping that the upcoming movie will remedy. In the mean time, however, there are lots of other ( Read more... )

I'm with Fox on this, I rarely see XF vids posted ever, not just at xf_fanfilm. Which makes me sad, being as late to vidding "fandom" as I am, because I feel like I've probably missed out on quite a lot (though going back and looking at your old recs really helps). It also sort of discourages me from the few ideas I have that I want to work on, which doesn't make much sense, as making vids now might help fill the void. Maybe it's the imagined idea of extra pressure to make something good, lol. 'Cause like Fox says, the shipper vids do tend to get pretty redundant.

My hope is that the movie will revive people's interest in doing new projects... I'm just like you in wishing that I had been involved in the fandom back when it was young and vital.

In the mean time, though, I suppose I'm spoiled. I have about 50 XF vids on my hard drive, and almost all of them are worth re-watching. It's good to know that you've found my recs worthwhile. Do you want some more?

Oh... and please, please do try making one yourself! There is a big community out there of vidders, even if not enough of them are XF fans. I for one would love to see what you come up with (I have so many songs that I would like to use myself) and I bet that Fox would too!

Yeah, I hope there's a resurgence too. That'd be really nice to see.

Oh absolutely, if it's not too much trouble! Your recs have all been great, so you obviously have good taste. :)

I'm sure I'll make at least one eventually (though I've got 3-4 ideas gestating at the moment), it's just a matter of getting past the "this is going to suck" mentality and doing it, lol. Sadly, I'm sure I'll be much less motivated to produce a couple of the ideas, as they would be primarily shippy, and such vids tend to get dismissed outright (and often with good reason).

I know what you mean about just doing it. In my case I have just about enough rudimentary technical skill to produce a vid, but I really don't have the patience to spend all that painstaking effort on it. Which is sad. Can I ask what songs you're thinking of using, if that's not too nosy? I have a list of thousands that I'd like to try out if I ever do decide that vidding would be a nice hobby.

And I'll try to post some XF recs later on today...

It's not too nosy! I generally don't share the ideas with people in general (as in, like in one of my posts or something), simply because it seems to add to the pressure of expectation, lol.

The ones I have the most fleshed out right now are a tribute to S1-7 set to Paul Van Dyk's "Time of Our Lives," and a Mulder-centric vid set to the Doves' "Caught By the River." A couple others are Gregory and the Hawk's "Boats and Birds" (centering around the abductions of both Scully and Mulder), and the rest are just vague, vague ideas for now, lol. I'm sure you know what I mean by that.

Know what you mean about expectations. I try to keep them as low as possible!

I have to say that I've never heard of any of those songs (I need to try harder) but maybe I'll look them up now. I adore vidding and can do it quite happily in my head even without the benefit of modern technology. Unfortunately, any castles constructed in air through that process can't be conveniently shared with others via the internet...

Haha yes, like Daria! If they're disappointed from the start, everyone wins! ;)

They're not exactly "big" vidding songs, I wouldn't guess. I heard them in odd places, too; the first was actually used in a Jeep commercial last year (heard it and fell in love, lol), the second in another show I watched (The Black Donnellys), and the last... I can't recall, but I stumbled across the lyrics somehow, and found them to be absolutely perfect. I'm very picky though; the lyrics aren't all that matter, I have to love the sound as well.
