We three are also childfree (except the rattumses) by choice. Most of my friends are, to the extent that I'm usually vaguely surprised when a friend chooses to procreate.
I'm not that concerned with overpopulation-- I'm not totally sure why, but not having children certainly is one reason, because I think most things human beings can do (atomic weapons excluded) would wipe out people or ruin human lives but leave Mother Earth chugging along in her own way, and my spice and I probably won't be around to see it. That seems harsh, but there you go.
I agree that adoption in the USA needs a major overhaul. OTOH, when that drives people to other countries, that isn't such a bad thing. My only nephew is from Chile, for instance, because eldersib and Math Guy were deemed slightlt too old to adopt in the USA.
It just doesn't make any sense to me that there are children out there who need homes and adoptive families are being turned away based on things like age, sexual orientation, job choice, etc.
I didn't get my sister pregnant. What I meant was, since she's my twin, and had kids, you know, it's just like if I had a kid, only I would never have sex with her weird-ass husbeast.
It's weird how strongly I feel that I live on in my one nephew, even though, as I said above, he's adopted. We even find ourselves saying things like, "Well, that's just like me when I was a kid" or "he certainly didn't get that from us."
I've long liked Richard Hofstadter's essay on genes & memes, and I guess I identify so much with the latter that I just plain forget that Nephew shares only those & not genes.
Did I tell you how it went when Mike and I tried to start the process of becoming foster parents? We were told we were ideal, that they were going to skip steps to make us foster parents sooner, loved our house and told us that we needed to get finger printed. Yet they forgot to tell us where we needed to go to do that. Nor did my three emails requests for the information get replied to. But, two months later, I get an email from the head of the specialized foster care community we were going with asking me if I was still interested and why didn't I get finger printed yet? No acknowledgement or apology for ignoring my emails. The organization was so poorly ran and it was a tragedy because they dealt with abused children who really needed families
