We three are also childfree (except the rattumses) by choice. Most of my friends are, to the extent that I'm usually vaguely surprised when a friend chooses to procreate.
I'm not that concerned with overpopulation-- I'm not totally sure why, but not having children certainly is one reason, because I think most things human beings can do (atomic weapons excluded) would wipe out people or ruin human lives but leave Mother Earth chugging along in her own way, and my spice and I probably won't be around to see it. That seems harsh, but there you go.
I agree that adoption in the USA needs a major overhaul. OTOH, when that drives people to other countries, that isn't such a bad thing. My only nephew is from Chile, for instance, because eldersib and Math Guy were deemed slightlt too old to adopt in the USA.
It just doesn't make any sense to me that there are children out there who need homes and adoptive families are being turned away based on things like age, sexual orientation, job choice, etc.
