Ember is there any other explanation why Serenity fell off the radar screen in one week? I did not see it in the top 8 for the weekend. there were several new releases I guess and just not at enough theaters? Did you say it was doing well in the UK, is it still?
I really dug it and will enjoy seeing it again and the sequel in 3 years :o)

Dear Jiowa: well, I think that in spite of the good (some great) reviews, 'Serenity' just didn't manage to get to the general public...I think the reasons are:
#1 a vague title which sounds like a chick flick #2 no big names stars (because if Tom Hanks was in it, it would have been HUGE) #3 this is a dead time of year for movies, none of them are doing great box office #4 a lot of people are just turned off by sci-fi, probably because there has been so much really bad boring sci-fi done in the last 10 years.
I was hoping that 'Serenity' could build an audience, but I'm afraid the numbers are bad enough so that a lot of theaters will replace it next Friday. I guess we'll see, I'm hoping that the bigger multi-screen theaters will keep it because it is in the top ten....
I'm keeping my fingers crossed that Serenity has a goodish weekend this weekend....
The news about the earthquakes is terrible... they were saying on the news today that they didn't think that there was one Pakistan familly in Britain that hadn't lost at least one relative in it... I think that there are going to be lots of aid agency's making Pakistan a priority, besides the Red cross... or Red Crescent because it's a Muslim country. Medicen sans frontiers will definitely be there, plus Oxfam, save the children etc...
Ummm... I've just been updating again... there may be something to interest you there ;¬D
Ahhh..... another Pratchett fan... I love his books.. Sourcery is great but my personal favourite is Guards Guards.... I love the Nightwatchmen and the Witches run them a very close second!
Oh!!Veronica Mars!!(I dance around the room as my computer downloads the episodes) Thank you! Yes, I am a relatively new Pratchett fan: a friend sent me her collection of about 15 paperbacks and I've barely started on them...I think this is going to take me a while, but I'm definitely having fun with them. I printed out the order in which the books were published, and I'm trying to read in that order...not that that is vital, but I definitely enjoyed the cliff-hanger of the 'Color of Magic' getting resolved in 'The Light Fantastic'.
Thank you for the suggestions for the disaster relief for the earthquake victims, it certainly feels like this has been the worst year for disasters (starting with the tsunami). Add to that that I've had so many dear friends struck by cancer this year, it is a little over-whelming.
thank you again for the VM goodness! I'll be grabbing Hex too. - embers (Maribeth)

Ugh, it's really pretty silly of Devin to denounce multiple viewings by fans when that's one of the hallmarks of the film geek -- they love something, they go see it again and again. It's hardly unusual, even if you're not a scifi geek. Lots of people saw the original Star Wars movies more than once when it was in the theaters 15-20 years ago. Teenaged girls going every week made Titanic break box office records. Conservative Christians going in groups and more than once, made a ton of money for Passion of the Christ. That's one of the very obvious, traditional ways that box office success is built over time
