So when I first heard the news about Jason Dohring's being cast in Moonlight, I was dubious. It seemed a lot like a step down, career-wise

I haven't heard anything about the premiere date, but I'd imagine early September.
I'm hoping this is good for his career. I, however, am not too worried about the typecast because while Logan started out that way, I think everyone came to realize that his character wasn't that bad. Or maybe that's just my fandom impression of him after a year in LJ.
I have no illusions that this show will be good, or that his material will be well-written. I'm just gleeful (for myself, mostly) that he has a part soonish which is servicing my evil yuppie scum narrative kink. I think I'd be less happy if the show had any kind of shot cause he could end up stuck on it, but the writing seems bad enough that the longest we'll get is a season, and then he's free and on the big network radar. Yay!
LOL. I love that. I think you're right that it's good that this show is likely destined for cancellation and will leave him open to be seen for other pilots for the following fall.
Yay! Another convert! As you've probably heard, the 'shaky cam' gets toned down significantly in the second half of the season. I'm glad you're enjoying it. :)
I wonder if these producers realize how much JD "saved" their show b/c seriously, have you heard ANYONE say she/he was going to watch before we learned JD would be in it? I haven't. I only planned to watch it after I heard about his casting...and now, with your description of JD's character as a combo of Spike and Logan, well DAMN it would be impossible for me NOT to watch. :)
I don't know how much adding VM's viewership will really help the show survive - even if every single VM fan tunes in, on any given week we only had 2-3 million viewers, which are easy cancellation numbers on a major network. And honestly the show may not be worth saving in terms of overall quality. But I will be happy to see JD on my screen again no matter what. :)
Yeah, "Saved" was definitely NOT the correct term since I've seen nothing but threads bashing the show, but *shrugs* I'll watch as long as he's on. (I think...)
Re: being typecast as the "bad boy" I didn't get the impression that this new character is a "bad boy" per se. Isn't he supposed to be the "mentor" or maybe the foil to the lead character?
We know that he's older than the lead character, but seems (from the 2 pages of "sides" I read) to be at least feeding on humans (he offers the lead character a "little something to eat," in the form of a beautiful girl). That implies to me that he's the "bad boy," though I don't have anything else to back that up. :)

Is he in the lead for this role or is this an ensemble show?

Off topic- I just started to watch FNL and I adore it. The camera work is different and I'm still getting use to it but the acting is amazing.
