When I feed Alice, she wants to grab the spoon. It's not because she wants to feed herself; it's because she wants the spoon as a toy. If I let her grab it, feeding stops and a large mess happens as she waves it around. It's also very difficult to get it away from her, and she yells when I do. But if I avoid her grab, she yells about that. Today ( Read more... )

Not a parent-type, but the first thought that comes to mind: two spoons. Let her grab the first (without food or with minimal food), and have the second one handy with the real food.

She snags the first, you feed with the second. If she tries to grab the second, go for the first spoon which she'll then defend because you're trying to take it away.

And make that spoon a game. Try to gently snag it and she'll keep it away from mommy because that's fun, and in the meantime you're getting food into her with the proper spoon.

(It may help to have the primary "feeding" spoon a dull and uninteresting color.)

That's a good idea. Thank you, I'll give it a shot.

Give her something MORE interesting that a spoon, and something not big enough to make a mess if she waves it around. Maybe you can pretend to feed a plushie, or give her something that makes noise. She'll stop grabbing the spoon, especially if you previously give her a spoon until she gets bored of it.

Heh. Have you had your second yet? I'm afraid I kinda dropped out of contact with what's up in your household, Maritza. ^^;; But yeah, your idea would probably work better than my "second spoon" idea.

Though all I can think of with the "give her something that makes noise" is "give the kid a squeak-toy" like I do with my dog. ^^ You probably meant a rattle though, especially as little kids can't easily squeak a squeak-toy. ^^;;

Actually, spoon #2 worked very nicely.

I wish I could remember. Since we're both still here, it seems we got through it.

Fred Gallagher just did a "The Real Life Adventures of Piro and Seraphim(+Jack)" that somehow... I think you could identify with. =^-^=

I'd wonder why no one's created a webcomic based on raising an infant to toddler except parents (who have all that experience) don't have any time to draw! ^^

Baby Blues! Though that's remarkably lame at times.
