Some people laughed. I SO feel for her though, I feel like an idiot talking to my TEACHER in French, never mind getting up in front of an audience and trying to express gratitude for such an epic award. Poor thing.

I remember the abject embarrassment I suffered every time I had to speak to someone in French! I was so terrified about my accent - apparently the only time I sounded good/confident was after I'd spent almost a month living in France for an exchange programme YEARS ago. The good accent disappeared very quickly once I got back home though. :(

I'm thinking Meryl WANTED to give the speech though - I think she must know some French herself, because she does a couple of asides that she wouldn't be able to do if she didn't have at least a passing knowledge of the language. Still, more power to her for speaking in French anyway. I'd so be begging for an interpreter! ;)

And eek. I would LOVE to take you to Australia with me!! D:

Ahh Meryl Streep! You're so pretty; what's with the dress? I liked the video, though. She gets MAJOR PROPS for the French (and I understood her too! Enough to know that it's "m'avez comprise," not "avez me compris," even. But still better than I could do on the spot, so no judging) And not only was it in French, she said actual stuff of substance. Yay!

She gave a really sweet, classy speech from what I can tell. She thanked them, of course, and then said that she was glad that she had the opportunity to tell the stories of difficult women - women who were difficult to like or understand, but she liked giving them voices. She thanked the French for embracing her life's work, basically. SHE WAS SO. INCREDIBLY. CLASSY, ZOMG.
