I removed my first corneal foreign body today. It's kind of a landmark moment for a new OD. Mine was a little bit of vegetative material, like maybe a little piece of leaf. But it had imbedded itself enough that removing it wasn't totally easy. But I did get it off. It's crazy how much your hands look like they are shaking under magnification, but ( Read more... )

Twice I've had to have a metal shard removed - both times acquired while cutting metal with a sabre saw. [And yes, the second time was despite the safety glasses.] The scarey part was that the second doctor could still see the scar from the first time, more then ten years earlier.

Yeah, the cornea can scar pretty easily. Scary that's happened to you twice!

Professional advice needed:

Say I have vision insurance, and it only pays for glasses OR contacts. I want both. Which one should I charge on the insurance (so I pay out of pocket for the other one), i.e. which is cheaper?

It depends a lot on what type of contacts you need. A spherical soft lens is pretty cheap, but if you require toric lens they can be more expensive.

In general I'd say it would probably be better to have insurce pay for contacts. It's easier to find a sweet deal on glasses somewhere - like a 2 or 1 deal at lenscrafters, or from an online source like http://www.39dollarglasses.com/.

yea! congratulations. it sounds like a huge moment! to be honest, eye stuff freaks me out more than anything. when i worked on the ambulance and was in EMT school, the eye parts left me frantic. i was sure i would lose it if i ever had an object impaled in an eye. luckily, i never had to test my theory, but the queasiness lingers. extra special good-on-ya for being able and willing to treat such an important part of the body!
