lol so i saw this on my flist days ago and made a mental note to come back to it after i'd seen the americans pilot and askjfdkfjd THE MUSIC THE CINEMATOGRAPHY THE PLOT was exactly my reaction.
i liked how elizabeth is the one with the steel in her, while phillip is all "they have air conditioners!" and proceeds to be seduced by the american dream. i liked that they made that choice for the woman to be the ideologically obdurate one. but i think when it comes to why she doesn't want to have sex with him it's not so much that they're fake married - that's what i thought at first, and i was kind of side-eyeing how close it was skidding to frigid bitch territory - but this here is a good breakdown of why she rejects his advances, which has less to do with their being spies than her being a sexual assault survivor. Which she can't tell Phillip about, because they were explicitly instructed not to share any information about their "other" lives:
In that space between the moment when we learn Elizabeth was raped and the moment Phillip
( ... )
i mean, i totally get everything you're/they're saying! it 100% makes sense for elizabeth to not be down for sex and i never ever had a problem with that, you know? my problem was that phillip kept stepping over those lines, repeatedly, and like he didn't need to know about the trauma. he just needed to be a respectful human and not be entitled to someone else's body.
so that was my problem? like it wasn't that i was iffy on elizabeth, it makes me iffy on phillip who i otherwise really enjoy.
No that makes complete sense! I am just so used to women's boundaries not being respected, i guess i probably give Phillip more credit than he deserves for the little sensitivity he shows. But you are right, you don't have to know why someone is traumatized or triggered, the decent human thing to do is to back the hell off. It's just unfortunate that there are so few decent human beings.
like honestly, phillip doesn't NEED an explanation. or he shouldn't. if this woman that he is supposedly in love with is like, "DO NOT DO THIS," repeatedly, then like.... here's the information you need, dude. you don't need to hear her upsetting backstory, you just need to be a HUMAN and be like, "ok i respect you as another human being and will not violate your space"?
ugh idk phillip i love you in all the other ways why you gotta be like this :/ like i get societal conditioning/expectations of the time, but dude if you want me to sympathize with you as a romantic hero how about not forcing your (fake?) wife to reveal her trauma to you so you'll back off???
