so it's festivids! i sometimes wish i could vid, man.
recs:
feel dead, inc. [cabin in the woods]
i haven't seen cabin because um, gore! but i feel like i might suck it up one of these days because it's a lot of shit i loooove. the timing of this - music, lyrics, mood - is all spot on.
some nights. [freaks and geeks]
i'd never seen freaks and geeks before this video and i picked it up afterwards. i'm a sucker for the song and the way it meshes aesthetics is really great.
smoke and mirrors. [mad men]
chilling deconstruction of mad men, characters and show. the music choice is evocative and harsh and the use of technique is impressively skilled.
another code against the gone. [moon]
this is actually terrifying. the song choice and clip choice build on the claustrophobia of the film and i was actually biting my nails by the end of it. really beautiful, though.
beautiful in los angeles. [the l.a. complex]
i don't think i've ever talked about it here but i ADORE the la complex. i binged on it around the end of last semester when i was supposed to be writing a paper and fell head over heels in love. it's ridiculous soapy fun but kal, raquel and connor have a surprising amount of heart to them. this is like, the chronicle of kaldrick king and it's GORGEOUS - song choice, editing, all of it. (the fight scene/sex scene intercut SLAYED ME.)
so um, it's been a long time since i talked about tv i guess? well, tv that isn't nikita (SHOW OF MY HEART, WHY DON'T OTHER PEOPLE LOVE IT LIKE I DO??).
tv:
the la complex
ugh i can't even articulate. this show was so nonsensical sometimes but dude, even when i was skimming whatever bullshit was happening with like, that teenage girl and her baby brother, i was SUPER IN LOVE.
my favourite characters are probably kal, connor, sabrina and raquel. kal is a powerhouse of a character! omg how good is andra fuller?! i think the lack of ~more~ of his story is the biggest tragedy of the show's cancellation (YULETIDE WHAT UP). seriously, him and jewel staite blow my mind every. single. time. and SABRINA, guys, how funny is she? nick's a dbag but i love how deconstructed the show is, like it can't just settle for a cliche ever. nick's a dork with a heart of gold but no, he's actually a Nice Guy! CONNOR omg where do i even begin with connor i love him and all of his issues SO DAMN MUCH. and RAQUEL like. how easily could she have been the worst person ever? (she is still the worst person ever but dude, i love her.)
whyyyy did you die, show. why :(
SO YEAH LET'S TALK ABOUT IT. (/write fic about it.)
freaks and geeks
after some nights i was like, hmm, why not? my only other option was doing statistics (which, worst thing i have ever seen in my entire life, ugh if i could just run away and hide forever I WOULD). i'm like... five episodes in? i like it well enough - lindsey is a really fun protagonist, james franco is hilarious, kim kelly is endearingly fucked up even though i didn't like her at the start, sam is ADORABLE. it's kind of heartbreakingly realistic, though those people weren't my friends in high school (did i even have friends in high school? i had the internet) i feel like the emotions are totally universal.
girls
idek - irl i talk a lot of shit about girls because it is SO overprivileged. watching it - yeah. everyone is a horrible person. i think i picked it up because alison williams is super cute on the mindy project (YEAH I WATCH THAT TRAINWRECK AVIDLY) and i really like her shiny hair. the show is... super uncomfortable but pretty watchable? idk, too much hannah is too much but it's compelling in that way that i totally recognize myself/my friends/people i know and our dynamics in it. there's something very true in lena dunham's authorial voice and can i just say: girls with bodies that look like mine! age appropriate casting! SO MANY OTHER PROBLEMS though HOLY SHIT.
the americans
so this post has been in the writing for literally DAYS during which i watched the pilot of fx's "the americans", if you don't know anything about it it's about a suburban american couple in the early 80s except boom! they're kgb agents pretending to be in love for 15 years- it is SO GOOD guys O M G. ugh i'm in love with literally every aspect of the show (except i have a couple quibbles about sexual dynamics which are pretty SPOILERY - every time phillip tries for sex with elizabeth she's like NO and he's like WE'RE FAKE MARRIED and that's kinda... not what i want from phillip as a character i like? idk be respectful, dude; also the introduction of elizabeth as the honeytrap was kinda tawdry and unnecessary, she could have killed a dude or like, bugged someone, or betrayed them - blowjobs are not the most evil thing in existence!; also idk, this is my lack of understanding probably but idr get that elizabeth's rape would necessarily have been something that general would have remembered? like... if he had it probably wouldn't have been a one-time thing. END SPOILERS. IDK. otherwise though, v. few problems). ugh the music, the cinematography, the plot is so tight and sharp and i'm interested in EVERY CHARACTER. the uncertain shifting dynamics between elizabeth and phillip honestly like, make me flip out. i watched the hour with my hand glued to my lower lip. NEW FAVOURITE SHOW!!!
let's talk about it FOREVER.
