Dear lolita brands, stop putting crosses on everything!

Mar 01, 2016 04:36

I never see anyone talking about this (I've seen it like once a loong time ago), so I'm wondering if anyone else is just as annoyed, for lack of a better word, as I am about lolita brands putting crosses on everything now? I understand it for like gothic brands/themes because they take from gothic architecture like elaborate cathedrals and stuff, ( Read more... )

Don't like, don't buy.

Agreed. There's plenty of nice dresses out there without crosses. Clearly there's some sort of demand for them or brands wouldn't be able to sell those dresses, but if it's not for you then no one is forcing you to buy it.

Obviously.

You know, I would have NEVER EVER thought of that myself.
Sarcasm aside, stop with these comments. Obviously I'm not gonna buy something I don't like and I think you know you're not giving solid advice for me, you're being condescending and dismissive. I posted this thread because I wanted to vent my frustrations, see if anyone felt the same way I do, and have a discussion, which has been GREAT aside from comments like these. And this logic is so flawed because it can be easily turned around and if I used it on you I'd say "Don't like it, don't comment.", silencing you, end of discussion, over.

I personally love crosses, as long as there's some sense to them. Moitie dresses with crosses on them? Yes. Angelic Pretty's latest berry print with crosses on it? Definite nope.

That's the kind of thing I don't like, things like when AP puts crosses with a berry print or carousel print just because.

AP really has only did that with maybe 2 prints...Cherry Marguerite and Shadow Dream Carnival.

Radiant Candlelight
Gloria
Horror Garden
Celestial
Luminous Sanctuary
Milky Cross
Nun OP set
Holy Lantern
Mercator Antique Shop
Dreamy Jewel

If I'm not mistaken these are the only AP prints that feature crosses, compared to all the AP prints they really don't uses crosses in prints that much. I think if I remember correctly there only 2 upcoming prints that have crosses....Holy Theater and Cecilia Cross.

All the same, that's a lot in my opinion for something that just has no business being there, with most of them I feel like it's uneccessary. I just don't know why they would do it other than to just be trendy, which is my guess. (Unless they have some sort of hidden agenda to promote Christianity, which I feel is the least likely reason.)

Funny enough my goal is to own every AP dress that has crosses on it, because I am a sweet lolita and I love crosses, so yeah. It's just an aesthetic I like, but on the other hand I dislike food prints.
I don't get mad when I see a brand/brands use pentagram(I'm a pagan), but that just me. If I have a friend that offended by any of my prints that have crosses on it, then I won't wear them around that friend...but I'm still going to buy the dress if I like. I'm sorry if this is coming our weird, I'm trying to type this on my way to my next class.

I also love cross AP (and food prints), especially Cherry Marguerite because the crosses made from daisies give me a very "pastoral scene" kind of feeling.

I grew up in a Catholic town but my parents weren't religious. I also like crosses a lot as an aesthetic motif, I think they give a pure or refined-romantic feeling, depending on the dress.

"...they give a pure or refined-romantic feeling, depending on the dress."

That's actually a really nice way to look at it, and if that were the case, I like it. But I do feel like brands like AP are doing it so often nowadays because cross motifs became a thing recently; so they put it on everything because it's a fad so they know people will buy it. I always thought people wearing it with like "pastel goth/grunge" fashions were doing it just to try and be edgy or something and I don't like that. I just don't want brands to be disrespecting a religion like that.

Why do you like crosses though? Also do brands use pentagrams often or have I not noticed those?

I completely agree with you, OP! Soooo tired of crosses everywhere. D:

Yeah it will honestly ruin an otherwise beautiful print for me, I hope they go out of style soon.

Same. I see so many dresses these days that I would pounce on, but then I see crosses and I'm like, "Nope, all the nope."

Also same. I always look for crosses in prints now before I pine for them, it's come to that.

Completely agree. If there is a cross even if small I will not buy it. To me it seems strange to wear a symbol of a religion unless you are part of it and trying to promote it and its corresponding beliefs. Glad to hear I'm not the only one tired of seeing crosses. I think in Japan they look at it as a cool gothic symbol and don't get the religious meaning of wearing it.

Thank you, and I'm glad I'm not the only one who thinks it weird either. I do doubt that people in Japan don't get it's religious meaning though, like even if they don't know the symbolism, it's a symbol of the most popular religion in the world, so I think they're sure to know that at least. I do think it's become something ~cool~ there, not necessarily as strictly gothic symbol though, as we were talking about Angelic Pretty using crosses a lot (for example, on a bright print with berries and flowers), and it's used a lot in fashions that use a lot of pastel colors. Still find it weird, still don't get why.

I think its because Japan has a much more relaxed view on religion than some other parts of the world. The two main religions there are Buddhism and Shinto. Lots of people mix and match the two depending on the occasion and don't really let it govern their lives.

Ah okay, I can see that being true, having a more relaxed sense of religion in general. Hmm okay...
