What really made a difference, the years that I did it, was riding the stationary bike over the winter. It's THE most boring thing in the world to do and it doesn't make you totally "road-ready," but it does make a difference.
About the flat tire, what I did was carry 2 new inner tubes and a compact bicycle pump. If you have quick-release hubs, it's about a two minute job to hop off, yank out the flatted tube and replace it with the new one. When you get home, you can patch the flat, if it's not badly damaged, and carry it for the next time.
I did this because I COULDN'T be late for work and I sure as heck didn't WANT to be late for dinner, lol...

I’m not so dedicated to having my “bike legs” over the winter as you were. I think I will put off Wilhelm till later in the summer just to avoid disappointment though!
