catch up

Last I wrote here was on Sunday. On Monday Candy and I biked around Lake Wilhelm. I was kind of dreading it. It is HARD to do Wilhelm (I think) so many hills to go up. I guess I don't like the sensation of having my heart pump and being out of breath. But Candy challenges me and I try to not be a wimp so we did it. This spring when I first got ( Read more... )

That's such a typical experience with the bike. I bicycle commuted to work for 7 years and it was a 20-mile round trip daily. The first 3 weeks or so in spring were absolute h*ll (that's NOT "hill," lol) but by about the 4th week it was much better.

What really made a difference, the years that I did it, was riding the stationary bike over the winter. It's THE most boring thing in the world to do and it doesn't make you totally "road-ready," but it does make a difference.

About the flat tire, what I did was carry 2 new inner tubes and a compact bicycle pump. If you have quick-release hubs, it's about a two minute job to hop off, yank out the flatted tube and replace it with the new one. When you get home, you can patch the flat, if it's not badly damaged, and carry it for the next time.

I did this because I COULDN'T be late for work and I sure as heck didn't WANT to be late for dinner, lol...

I ordered 2 new tubes for Sebby’s bike so he will have them in the future. This is the bike he will be taking with him to college this fall and he is planning to ride it every day. He got a good lesson from Grandpa Dave last night on fixing a flat and patching a tube so I’m hoping he will be ready for anything (bike related) when he gets to Bradford this fall. I’m planning as a parting gift I will get him a set of bike tools too.

I’m not so dedicated to having my “bike legs” over the winter as you were. I think I will put off Wilhelm till later in the summer just to avoid disappointment though!

Yup, fixing flats is definitely good to know. And the spares are good if you're in a hurry, it's dark, the weather is bad, or you're a long ways out. I've been all of the above, with just a patch kit. Which might lead one to the conclusion that I'm a slow learner, lol.

What...Dave had to go clear to Erie for jury duty! How many times did he have to go? I hope not more than one day. I would think you'd only get called for Franklin or Venango County, never as far away as Erie!

The bike tools will be a great gift for Sebby! I'm excited for him and the next journey of his life!

It was for Federal Grand Jury. He didn’t get picked so he only had to go the once. He was actually hoping to get picked. He thought it would have been very interesting.

Yes, I’m happy for him too but I’ll miss him.

Good on you for it going back to only three hills being hard!

And I can't believe you wanted to go for another bike ride that afternoon!

Glad you and Dave finally found that restaurant!

Yes, I was pretty amazed. I thought this is my life, getting old and weaker by the year but I’m thinking now that my abilities might have been governed by the time of year I try it instead.

I’m glad we found it before the rain came! I was telling Dave that if the rain started I was giving up the search and would eat anywhere.
