※ Making Ends Meet
Where is everything in Edensphere?
There is a
world map that details all the places in Edensphere. Make sure to pay attention to all the details because there are some places that characters cannot reach yet. Similarly, there are other places that have special prerequisites before characters can reach them.
Ask the Mods |
Back to TopHow does my character obtain a job?
Employment listings are available on
this post. Pay attention to the availability of a job before requesting employment since some require a specific skill set or are limited in availability. If the job you would like is unavailable, it will not have a visible comment thread (so please don't post a new one), and you will need to select a different job. If your character is employed but not currently listed, please obtain permission to edit the post and add your character to his/her respective job.
Ask the Mods |
Back to TopMy character applied for a job--why wasn't s/he approved for it?
When choosing a job to pursue, please bear in mind your character's particular skills and personality. A character shown to be clumsy in canon would be a very bad choice in the medical unit, for instance, and a character with no tact might not be the most successful merchant. There are definite perks to some of the jobs, but please consider where your character would be best suited rather than what sort of pay/housing you personally think you want. Similarly, if your job choice has an IC supervisor, they will have a say in whether or not your character is hired, so be prepared for that.
Ask the Mods |
Back to TopI got my character employed so s/he wouldn't get kicked out of temporary housing, but I don't want him/her to work that job forever. What now?
You could try to get your character another job that you think s/he might be more interested in. The only limitations to obtaining more than one job are supervisor interviews/evaluations, a character's physical stamina (eating, sleeping, non-work activities/errands/chores as well), and realistic time restrictions. Considering the nature of most jobs, the mods believe that characters can hold two jobs at most; beyond that, mod consultation is required. And if you'd like to ween it back down to one job or your character is now employed in his/her ideal field, s/he can have a job change. His/her housing will be affected by the job change unless s/he is living with another working character who can maintain the same residential assignment.
Ask the Mods |
Back to TopMy character is best suited to a job that doesn't exist--what do I do?
Although the appropriate job may not be offered or available, it's possible for a character to eventually shape and mold a new path in employment in the future. But keep in mind that it won't happen overnight; for example, not all merchants become rich in a single day. So if you need any help getting started in creating a new career path, feel free to approach moderation for details, help, and support.
As a friendly reminder, characters are allowed to have job switches, so s/he doesn't have to keep the first job forever. S/he could take any other available job that is best suited to his/her abilities (a social character might want a merchant job, characters that are thieves or really nosy might want to be residential housekeeping for access to people's houses) before realizing his/her true 'calling' so to speak. This happens often enough realistically, and it's also possible for this to happen in Edensphere as well.
Ask the Mods |
Back to TopWhere can I find out what's going on?
The
events post details activities and events that will take place 'sphere-wide for the entirety of the current month. Any further planning, discussions, and sign-ups for various events (including player-initiated ones) are posted to the OOC community, usually tagged '
plot bunnies'. As of May 2008, the current events page also features an archive of past events for reference; it is located in small font near the bottom of the events post.
Ask the Mods |
Back to TopCan I make an event suggestion or request?
Feel free to
make suggestions, but please keep in mind that there is a theme and concept behind Edensphere. Certain types of events cannot and will not work out with the theme or need careful planning and adjustment to properly fit in; therefore, please don't expect the be the event to be implemented immediately.
In addition, please note that Edensphere events do not include traditional/religious holidays, such as (and not limited to) Valentine's, St. Patrick's, Halloween, Christmas, etc. The creators of Edensphere do not celebrate most of these holidays or traditional practices and would feel uncomfortable doing so; they understand that there may be players who would feel similarly. However, this does not mean that they will not set up events that are similar to said holidays as long as they are at completely different or unrelated times during the year.
Ask the Mods |
Back to Top※ Memory Retrieval
Can my character get his/her memories or real name back?
There are two ways that a character can regain memories: (a) using a
memory crystal, or (b) participating in the '
A Trip Down Memory Lane' event. In situations when a character encounters déjà vu, s/he may experience a feeling of unknown familiarity; however, this generally will not be enough of a jog to fully recall or realize any names or memories. During crossover events, it is possible for characters to meet with canonmates or other characters who know pertinent information, but crossover events also have rules controlling the amount of information a character learns about him/herself.
Ask the Mods |
Back to TopWhat is the 'A Trip Down Memory Lane' event?
This is a
log-based event that takes place for the whole fourth week of one month; the event takes place every other month. A few groups of people will be doing their usual business, heading into the elevator to go wherever they need. Instead of being taken where they want to go, they find themselves trapped inside as the elevator takes them to the fourth floor. Normally all elevator functions completely prevents access to the fourth floor; however, the elevator opens up here and refuses to budge or otherwise return its occupants to their destinations...
Once they arrive, all people in the group lose sight of each other and experience one of the participant's memories in full detail and with all senses. Because the memory is revealed in 3D projection form, none of the characters can interact with their surroundings, and any attempt to touch objects or people in the projection results in its slight fizzling or holographic static.
Moderation posts into the OOC community to in
preparation for the
event, and participants are requested to indicate whether or not they would like their character to experience his/her own memory--if so, they must provide a draft of the memory submission that the group of characters will be viewing during the time of their stay at the fourth floor. Details of whose characters and memories will be participating in the current month's round are provided before the actual event.
Ask the Mods |
Back to TopWhat is a memory crystal, how does it work, and can my character have one?
Memory crystals are items that generally allow a single character to experience only one memory in limited senses. There are other types of crystals that may look similar but have different effects. Essentially, it looks like a shining crystal floating in the middle of a set of rings that can be used to carry it around without actually activating it.
Typical memory crystals are used for experiencing and regaining memories; a user can activate the crystal by touching the crystal in the center. Once activated, the crystal then loses its shine. While experiencing the memory, the user goes into a trance. Others who are around at the time will not notice any other changes or differences other than a user's reaction or after effects from the memory. Most characters use only as intended as effects may vary with misuse (i.e, microwaving the crystal). Mod consultation is required for other memory crystal misuses/abuses.
There are some events that provide random opportunities to obtain memory crystals, and there are some characters who'll give them out if yours pays the right price. Finally, players can request memory crystals for their character(s) in the plotting post. As of September 30, 2010, new players are required to wait two weeks after joining before requesting a crystal. This is to give the player time to adjust to the pace and style of the game.
Ask the Mods |
Back to TopWhat kinds of memories can my character experience or obtain, and do I have to write it out?
Generally memory crystals contain scenes/dialogue from the character's canon as well as canonically implied 'behind-the-scenes' moments. Those who have AU or carry-over characters may use AU/previous game memories as well; however, we recommend that players using such memories please run them by the moderation team.
As of Sep 26, 2008, players are required to post their character memories as citations and references so other characters can refer back to it for background because regaining any memory may cause alterations to a character's personality and/or interactions. And there is a mysterious place where characters can re-experience memories that characters have obtained via old, used, or abandoned memory crystals.
Ask the Mods |
Back to Top※ Memory Loss
Can my character lose their memories again?
There are two ways characters can lose their memories in Edensphere. The first way is through death and rebirth. A character way be partially 'reset' with certain events erased. Memory loss is also an acceptable punishment for killing off a character, detailed in our death policy here. This loss is permanent. The second way involves utilizing a memory loss crystal, explained below.
Ask the Mods |
Back to TopWhat is a Memory Loss Crystal?
A memory loss crystal is the functional opposite of a memory crystal. It appears exactly like a normal memory crystal save that when it is unactivated it has a dull appearance. It also has the same metal ring that encircles a normal crystal, unless the memory crystal was made from cocoon goo, as described
in the Experimental FAQ. Once activated the memory loss crystal will remove a memory from a character. The crystal will then start to glow. The character will experience the loss as though she or he is instantly reliving the memory, however they will not recall this experience after. Instead they will suddenly feel refreshed and may not necessarily notice that she/he has lost a memory--unlike a normal crystal the effects are not immediately apparent. All of this occurs in an instant so that the character does not perceive any loss of time. There is no punishment for using a memory loss crystal. At this time, the memory loss from a memory crystal is permanent. However this is subject to change pending the on going development of world plot. As such players are highly advised to use caution when opting for a memory loss crystal.
Ask the Mods |
Back to TopHow do I request a Memory Loss Crystal?
Memory loss crystals may be requested on the plot post, in the same matter of all items in game. Moderation requires that new players wait a minimum of two weeks after joining to request this item, for obvious reasons. The memory loss is typically done by removing one memory at a time, however if a player is interested in removing multiple events, they may request this and moderation will contact them. The memory chosen to be removed can be be anything from a monthly event (like a Fourth Flooring), log or it can be a past memory that was previously received in game. But again use caution--that memory will then be inaccessible to the character.
Ask the Mods |
Back to Top※ Hiatus &/or Inactivity
I'm going on/back from hiatus--how do I explain what my characters are/were up to during my inactivity?
The
rules indicate how long a character can be inactive before being removed, but don't hesitate to
contact moderation if there's a situation or incident that might keep you away longer than the usual allowance. While you're away, you're free to assume your characters were on auto-pilot and performing their normal daily activities, but moderation can help if you'd like something more plot- or memory-related as an explanation. If you are likely to be on hiatus for more than two weeks, then please be considerate of other players who may live with/work with/closely interact with your character when deciding whether to leave them on autopilot. Agreeing interactions beforehand can avoid a lot of IC and OOC headaches!
Here are some possible in-game explanations for a character's inactivity:
- Illness: Aside from physically inflicted injuries, a character can become ill from exposure to the elements, though this is limited only to minor, non-fatal ailments. (Mod consultation not required.)
- Losing Journals: Edensphere is a big place, and it's easy to drop or otherwise misplace one's journal.Finding one's journal: Maybe your character accidentally misplaced it at home or work. Or it's jammed in between some branches of the tree, and your character has been studiously trying to yank it out for days. It might be something very mundane and normal, and your character will be able to find and use his/her journal once again.
(Mod consultation not required.)
Replacing one's journal: So maybe your character really cannot find his/her journal after searching for an extended period of time. Or it was stolen, and the perpetrator will not give it back. There are always new journals available at the paper factory where they are made, so the character can replace his/her old one. New journals have a few of the most recent entries ready for reading. Note: New entries will cease to appear in any journal that has been discarded or otherwise abandoned for a replacement.
(Please inform moderation if your character has given up searching for his/her journal and obtained a new one.)
- Disappearances: There are a lot of strange things that happen in Edensphere, and characters may be away for lengthy periods of time for a variety of reasons.Getting lost in The Wilderness: As described on the map post, anyone who goes into The Wilderness without a companion becomes inexplicably lost. Maybe it wasn't your character's intention, but OOPS! Wrong floor! Maybe your character is stubborn and wouldn't write for help right away. Or maybe another character eventually ran into and found yours. This is a flexible means of explaining one's absence in the 'sphere.
(Mod consultation not required.)
Taken hostage by the elevator: Similar to 'A Trip Down Memory Lane', the elevator may kidnap your character and spit him/her out in The City Without Shape -or fourth floor- where the character witnesses a strange event or isolated occurrence.
(Mod consultation required.)
Death: Perhaps your character learned far too much... or maybe something in Edensphere just doesn't. like. him/her. So why not write out an explanation of his/her death, and perhaps you'd like to log out a brand spanking new birthday log, too!
(Mod consultation required.)
Ask the Mods |
Back to TopMy character's roommate disappeared for some reason--what happened to all of his/her possessions?
Unless otherwise notified, housekeeping allows any resident's belongings to remain as-is (aside from the usual tidying up) in their homes up to 1 1/2 months if there are no signs that the resident lives in that home. During this time, it is possible that roommates, friends, other loved ones, enemies, or thieves will loot said resident's important possessions. Once the 1 1/2 months (or otherwise prolonged period of time) expires, housekeeping discards any remaining possessions--if the home is completely cleared out, it is then prepared for new occupants.

※ Death & Rebirth
Can my character die, and how do I work out killing him/her?
Disappearances are not uncommon, and death is always a possibility. As of April 30th 2010, all deaths resulting from player-initiated plots --as opposed to a mod-planned event-- require a new dream as well as some form of character loss as punishment. For more information on what constitutes a mod-planned event, please see
below. Players may contact the mod in charge of death plots via the
plotting post or through the
mod contact page. A character loss is defined as one of the following:
- Partial loss of memory: This includes losing the memory of certain characters, events or any memories of their lives the character may have gained prior to their death. The specifics of the memory loss are player decided.
- Total loss of memory: Also known as a reboot or a reset, this occurs when a character loses all memory of Edensphere and all memories of their past lives they may have gained prior to their death.
- Ability loss: Characters can choose to lose an ability--either physical or magical-- they may have been born with or discovered in game. Specific ability loss is player decided.
- Other: Players can speak to moderation directly to negotiate a character loss specifically tailored to their character and circumstances.
Character deaths do NOT require complete resetting (meaning loss of Edensphere memories) unless the player changes/updates what point in the timeline the character is taken from (i.e, via canon updating). They are able to chose from one of the different forms of character loss as outlined above.
Any character killed in a player-initiated plot is now required to allow a minimum period of three days between the character's death and subsequent rebirth. We also require the player to write or designate a new/different dream for his/her character. Moderation requests that players' dreams be posted to the character's journal. Feel free to be creative and explore new dimensions when creating your character's second dream!
The only exceptions to the death policy occur when a character dies during a mod-planned event, which is defined as a large-scale, game-wide event initiated by moderation or with mod assistance. An example is the mass death that resulted from the fall
2009 Fire. To prevent confusion, moderation will announce when an event is applicable.
Please note that in no way are these changes to the game's death policy meant to discourage or micromanage players. Rather, the aim is to create a more organized mechanism for moderation to keep track of player initiated plots that may impact the rest of the playerbase. Basically we hope that it will allow everyone to be kept in the loop and for a more smooth gameplay.
Meta-info about death in Edensphere (for player reference):
- In the event that a character is killed or dies, the corpse will remain for up to three days before simply vanishing without a trace. It is possible, however, to remove and preserve various parts of the body before it vanishes.
- New entries cease to appear in a journal the moment that its original owner dies, and the journal itself will disappear if it wasn't given to someone else for safekeeping.

Back to Top ※ Birth Dream
What is Dream Dust?
Dream Dust is an item that will allow a character to experience the birth dream of another resident, currently or previously in the sphere. It was debuted on October 1st in a mysterious event in which ten residents were gifted an hour glass filled with Dream Dust. Dream Dust looks like rainbow colored sand, with fine granular minerals of an unknown origin. The item is activated by touch--much like a memory crystal. On direct skin to skin contact with the unactivated sand, the character will be completely engulfed in a violent rainbow sandstorm. Attempts by outsiders to touch the sandstorm will cause them to be thrown backwards. Once the sand clears the character will be completely encased in a clear cocoon. They are large enough to hold the victim of the sand in a comfortable, prone position and cannot be broken. The character is trapped within the clear cocoon for 24 hours in a coma like state in which they will experience the birth dream of another character. Once the twenty-four hours are up, the cocoons will crumble into ordinary, tan colored sand with no distinguishable features whatsoever.
Ask the Mods |
Back to TopHow do I request Dream Dust and a dream?
Players can use the
Plotting Post to request Dream Dust. Moderation requires that new players wait a minimum of two weeks after joining to request this item. Players can request the sand with a dream in mind or they may request the item and leave the birth dream up to the decision of the mod or help staffer. There is no in game punishment for using Dream Dust, HOWEVER please keep in mind the mandatory 24 hour sleep period in which that character may not be played. Plot accordingly. To find a birth dream to request, players are directed to utilize the
edensphere_repo community. IMPORTANT NOTE: Please pay particular attention to the
Permissions listed on each dream posted in Repo! There are three permission options in Repo, so please pay close attention to your options:
Free for use: You may use this dream for Dream Dust.Private (Do Not Use): You MAY NOT use this dream. Negotiable: You must contact the player directly to use this dream. Alternatively, you may ask a mod to negotiate this with the owner. Ask the Mods |
Back to Top
Can I request a dream that is not in
edensphere_repo?
The short answer: it will depend. Moderation will make these decisions on a case by case basis, once the player has made the request in the plotting post.
Ask the Mods |
Back to Top Can I request a dream that has world plot significance?
To request an NPC's birth dream or a dream from a character that has world plot significance, please indicate your interest in the plotting post. Moderation will again decide these on a case by case basis. Factors that will affect moderation's decision may include: 1) How long your character has been in the sphere, 2) Your current activity level, 3) The NPC's current activity level and 4) where we are in world plot ICly. There may be times where we cannot give out an NPC's dream due to evolving in game events. If this happens moderation will negotiate alternatives. We appreciate your understanding of this logistical concern.
