well, okay, not so bored.  after i wrote that title, i decided i should read through the editing suggestions on the two chapters RK looked through on his way to India and gave back to me today.  (according to him, there would be a comma before "and gave back to me today".  why can't i have a professor who actually follows English grammar?  or uses ( Read more... )

Oh yes. The round and round and round circular editing crisis. I think its fueled by an advisor that forgets the previous suggestions until you essentially come full circle.

Erg, editing. The grammar stuff is one thing, but so many of the other things are so subjective... (I'm kind of on the other end of the rope, because we have very few meeting with our thesis tutors and are mostly left on our own to do corrections)

yeah, so much of it makes perfect sense or seems like the best phrase to me...oh well. i guess it is better to have some input than be left hanging on my own. i wouldn't want to turn in my thesis without having someone in the know look it over first. good luck!

Uh, it's called a "list of terms"! anonymous October 5 2007, 01:39:37 UTC
So, if your format doesn't already have this handy-dandy little thing for your thesis - I would HIGHLY recommend it. A "List of Terms" or "Definition of Terms" section in a thesis/dissertation is a God send for those stupid little definition differences between the sciences/topics/areas of focus. Also helps for the abbreviations you use for technical terms (doesn't replace the list of abbreviations, however! Darn!) for those people who aren't in your topic area - which is like your entire freakin' committee! It saved my butt with 2 of my committee members - the nit-picky asshole and the nice guy who was from outside my focal area. Neither one was really clear on a few definitions but putting them right in as a glossary type section - saved my butt!! More work, though. -g

yeah, but my advisor would never let me use that particular term in that way even if it was on the list of terms...'cuz it's the other way on his list of terms, aka the only list of terms he acknowledges. also, i've used a list of terms in every single paper i've written. i know what one is.

p.s. okay, that was bitchy. sorry. mostly i'm just frustrated 'cuz i need to to be able to use both definitions, but can't figure out how without constantly being all "here we're using definition two...and here we're using definition one."
