dudes, i am thinking about a new camera. specifically, a point and shoot, since my trusty sony died a few months ago and my iphone just isn't a camera for all seasons.

so it's between these:
- panasonic lumix lx3 (expensive, but mmmm leica and it has a few quite sexy features and is brilliant in low light, though a shortish zoom)
- panasonic Read more... )

I have the LX3, and it's great w/r/t quality like you say, but the zoom really is v poor indeed.

ahhhhh right! okay this is good because i need to know just exactly how much it would piss me off, if you see what i mean. how much does it piss you off ..?

Most of the time, I'm taking photos that don't need me to zoom. I mostly take photos of buildings, food, people, gigs. Just occasionally it'd be nice to pick out a detail, and it gets frustrating. However, I found having a camera with slightly ropey image quality to be way more annoying.

yeah, totally. i love taking pix in low light as i'm not a huge fan of flash, and it used to really piss me off that my sony was poor in low light. and it turns out lots of compacts are. well hey listen thanks ewan this is really helpful .. and as you have a far bigger f-list than i do, do feel free to ask other people for their recommendations too ;-)

Oooh, I'm also looking for a new camera just to the specs you describe. Will watch your post with interest and possibly resomething it later.

thank you my darling! up to now i've been a loyal sony consumer but i don't think their recent offerings are up to much -- and the 3 cameras i am looking at all seem so different, i just can't decide which i want. if i didn't have the d90 i'd be going for the powershot g10, no question .. xxxx

i don't actually have any of these cameras myself, and i've no idea about the model but friends of mine have a lumix with a leica lens and it takes gorgeous photos. i always said if i was ever to get a compact digital it'd be one of those!

i have a very battered canon eos 500. film all the way baby, mostly cross processed slide film. i have three plastic cameras that take some good pics occasionally too. i swear though, anyone can take a good picture as it's mostly about the framing & such rather than the equipment!

i've sorted out being in a group exhibition about birds, i'm well excited. it's in less than two weeks though so i'm gonna be busy!

woo! that's exciting :-)

yeah, i totally agree about how equipment doesn't make a good photographer, definitely. that said, i think that once you've got a bit of a sense of your own style and what you like to photograph, it is important to pick kit that complements that .. i guess that's what i'm trying to do, really. i went and had a play with some cameras at jessops today and it was pointless as they didn't have the one i most wanted to try out .. ho hum ..

I have a Fuji Finepix...um, Z10? Or something? As a point-and-shoot - it is small and fast, easily fits in a pocket and can thereby be concealed from the Sudanese authorities! I absolutely love it, and it comes in exciting colours!

ooh very cool. concealment is important, yeah. my big camera is very much not concealable and this was an issue in brazil .. not so much for hiding from the authorities as hiding from pickpockets etc. this is a very good point and one i had not considered. *ponders*

i have the canon ixus 100 is and i love it! it does really good low light photos, can do wide angle and so far i've found it pretty customisable though maybe don't push it as far as you might be wanting to?
