Help Me Out

Apr 04, 2011 18:21

Alright everyone, I have a question for all of you. I'm currently writing an AU of the super sekrit kind, and I need your opinions on something. What kind of music do you think Arthur would like best? I'm talking genres, though specific bands would be useful. Classic rock? Alternative? It seems like a minute detail, but it's actually a cornerstone ( Read more... )

I think that the choice of music to notify the dreamers that the dream is about to end was Arthur's choice - Edith Piaf singing La Vie En Rose. I'm not absolutely sure though. If it was his choice, that may help in figuring out what he likes to listen to.

Do you think so? I would have thought it would have been Mal's choice, but admittedly that's me making the Piaf = Marion = Mal connection, and that our knowledge of living!Mal is almost entirely fanon.

Personally I agree; I think Arthur listens to modern classical music. Is that an oxymoron? It feels like an oxymoron. Perhaps a better word for the genre would be modern orchestral. Also, music with strong, technically sound singers.

I think Arthur listens to punk. Angry, loud, raucous punk.

Eames would probably listen to whatever he can get on the radio at the time, with a special affinity for anything from the decade he grew up.

Cobb would probably listen to whatever reminded him of Mal. Sappy love songs, depressing stuff.

I think Mal would have listened to jazz, something smokey and free form. Free spirited, unconstrained, always evolving.

I am like, 98% that Mal is now a jazz fan in my personal canon now, if only because of how you described it here. And I kind of like the idea of Arthur being eally into punk, like he's angry on the inside, though I'm not married to it. And your thoughts on Cobb and Eames hit right where mine did.

i can totally see this. old school punk or something like rage against the machine. i can just imagine him putting in headphones and putting on some crazy angry music while training; it would serve to psych him up. i also think arthur would be the type to be rough and hard to contain underneath his perfect suits and polite speech c:

I don't know why but I always thought Arthur would listen to coffee-shop singers and indie music during his free time.

Also, Yusuf likes showtunes. *nods*

Cobb reminds me of my Dad with how he dresses, so I always thought he'd probably listen to classic rock, at least when he was in a good mood.

Eames seems like the type to listen to crooner music to me. I don't know why.

This is actually really close to what I was thinking, but I couldn't be sure. What will probably happen will be some mix of everyone's comments, though yours seems to hit strongest.

I'm in complete agreement about Arthur... I think he'd listen to indie music. Things that aren't exactly mainstream, but aren't far out there either. Personally, I just think it's too easy to put him into the classical music box, like constantly putting him into a three-piece suit, ya know??

Oh a music question...

I suggest Hard Bop or Cool Jazz for Arthur. People like Miles Davis, Thelonious Monk or Herbie Hancock. Throw in some classic rock though I can't really be more specific there.

Mal... Debussy, and other classical artists. The more light and whimsical pieces. I would add Garou, too if only for his french songs.

Ariadne - Emilie Autumn, some trance songs, or dance mixes. Though some rock fits her too. Bands like Three Doors Down, I think. Maybe some Simon and Garfunkel.

Mmmm, I like your thoughts, especially for Mal. And I'm still strongly considering Jazz for Arthur, so I'm glad you brought it up for him.

The thing with jazz music is that it's so broad as a genre, so you can have what seems to be a random assortment of note to what you could consider a dance piece (like swing music.) So yes, I see Arthur as a man who would appreciate the genre given what we've seen of his tastes in the movie, both sophisticated, and sometimes, not quite to the norm.

Mal is hard to think of since we saw so little of her, but yeah, glad to have helped.

To be honest, almost every genre can be considered broad, rock is another perfect example. And your help is much appreciated, it's already coming in handy.

Arthur is a tough one, but a band that could work in my opinion is Nick Cave and the bad seeds. Playing alternative rock with very interesting lyrics that tell stories, such as their album Murder ballads, which yeah.. is just about murder's. The music is quite calm though and not really what people think of when they hear rock ( ... )

This was very useful! Especially for Saito, but for everyone else too. You seem to be feeling exactly how I do about Arthur's tastes, and Cobb's too. Hm. I like this comment very very much.

Your view on Yusuf seems unique, but I like the way you said it. He'd be the sort to maybe want something to hum while he's working, but not really looking for any more.

Then I'm glad I could help out! :)
Ah, Japanese music is my own main music genre that I like to listen to, especially the older bands mentioned and back in Japan, they are huge. So it wouldn't be that surprising for him to like something like that.
The thing I have with Arthur and music is that he wont listen to it if he doesn't get something out of it. And very few bands tell stories the way that Nick Cave & the bad seeds does in such a way that he would probably like it. Plus Nick has a very lovely voice to listen to.
