Met on the information highway

Jan 12, 2010 10:42

So yesterday, during a rather hellacious commute home (omgwtf 1/2/3 trains?), I bumped into Steph. I was already traveling home with a co-worker, Alexie. We're all standing waiting for the train when Alexie says "so, where do you two know each other?" I smiled wide, turned to look at Steph and said, "where do we know each other from?!" LOL Steph ( Read more... )

it amuses me, lj related, pre-modem

Of my friends who I've known since AOL days, I've only met you and Valencia IRL. I tell it like it is when someone asks.

I tell the truth, but I remember back in the day when I was dating you know who, he said he never told anyone we met online, that we met through a friend{I think he said Ylayn}

However when one of my co-workers{gloria} would ask about Linda.{they never met, but I talked about her alot}, she always asked about my friend that went to school here{Emory} so she has never been the internet friend.

Sometimes I say online but I don't think I ever say livejournal because a lot of people still have no clue wtf that is. But at what point does the online background become a moot point? I feel like if I've known you long enough in person and we've cultivated a real friendship, can't I just say "we've known each other for a while." Half my IRL friends, I can't really easily explain how/where I met them either. And instead of saying "oh we're in the same POC meditation group" or "we used to put on crazy feminist events together" I just tell people we've known each other for a while. But I like the mutual friends answer, it works too..lol!

Agreed.

It really does. Someone we knew from when we all met on the AOL message boards once said she "had a mutual friend" with her then boyfriend, whom she'd also met from the same AOL msg board(s). I always thought that was kinda cute. In my mind, AOL was the "mutual friend." lol Then recently someone that I was/am pretty sure had/has a pre-modem mindset asked me how I met Jon I adapted it to say we "ran in the same circles." I really think it's a great euphemism that works.

that's hilarious. Even though it's not really taboo anymore, I still FEEL like it is so I'll do the same thing. Usually though, since I haven't actually met most of y'all it's just someone I'm talking to about you. So for instance i'll be like "yeah my friend linda said blah blah" and they want to know who that is and I'll just say she's an old friend from school. And with three different schools to choose from, chances are they won't get suspicious. It's not very often that I admit these are internet friends. It just SOUNDS weird!

And I actually haven't made any NEW friends in quite some time. It is weird to me to just start chatting up a complete stranger now.

I'm trying to remember how Linda or I described our relationship when she met my brother at my graduation. Again, I think at the point that you are attending each other's college graduations, it's gone beyond "my internet friend" stage. lol

"Well, technically I didn't lie."

Not even technically. I would say it's not a lie at all. Though with the production I made it's clear it's not the full truth. lol He was at Riker's yesterday and will be there today as well. So I have to wait until Thursday to see if he has some kind of "did you and that guy have sex before?" reaction. lol
