Before I left for work this morning, I grabbed a book I got at a training about a year ago. It's called Parents, Teens and Boundaries. I remember loving this book when I first got it. I mean, my mother never raised a finger to me and I had all the respect in the world for her. And she didn't use "time-out!" lol She certainly wasn't passive either. She just had high expectations for me and made it clear what she would and would not accept from me. It was that simple.

I hate people who down time-outs and praise the belt. Uhhh... How about neither?

Have you read any Alfie Kohn? He's kinda white-centric, but I appreciate some of his points about praise and punishment being two sides of the same coin.

Exactly! I love that people seem to think those are the only two options. And you're either a potential villain in your child's life or a potential doormat.

You know, you mentioned him before and I remember googling him and liking what I read from the quick skim, but I haven't gotten too deep into his work. He's focused on education related theories, right?
