The Good
Irregardless of what you think, "conversate" is a word.

Can we rest this "debate" now?

A highlight:
"People feel that there is a certain kind of language that's appropriate and a certain type that isn't appropriate. And these judgments are based on many things--some may make sense, some might not. People take these things very seriously ( Read more... )

Sigh....is there a Drop Squad for dangerously misguided wannabe militants? If so, I'm volunteering her as its first case. You know this bitch read way too much bell hooks and Panther shit and thought this was her way of smashing the white capitalist heterosexist patriarchy. You know she's probably not even from Oakland. Just got there a couple years ago for grad school in cultural studies or some shit.

"You know she's probably not even from Oakland."

Uh huh. She ain't. That witch is from San Fran. Came over to fuck up the property of folks in another neighborhood. Then nicely carried her ass back home that night.

That was a good article. I have honestly never given a 2nd thought to where the acceptance of certain words and rejection of others originated. And the way that the OED Editor described it made perfect logical sense. I guess I just really get irked :D about "conversate" because it seemed as if it was derived and spread out of ignorance, and why would people knowingly spread ignorance? But I needed another POV i guess. Thanks for that.

Bleh.

"Conversate" and "irregardless" hurt my ears. Just like people using reflexive pronouns (myself, yourself) as subjects or non-reflexive objects (example: James and myself are going to the game).

But that's just me.

I actually have never used conversate. But I have heard enough conversations around its legitimacy to make me smile heavily when I read this article. I might begin to use it after this. If only to spark arguments about language and the authority of the OED. lol!
