Fantastic. Why did I think that was a good idea? I called my mother on my way to get lunch to share with her the good news about the lift on the marriage ban. Her response ( Read more... )

Ugh, it's so true. I don't really understand how so many can be like, "Oh, we support the gays.. but marriage is xxxxx."

Nyrrr no. Equal rights = we're not lower than you, home skillets. Because seriously, what's sadder than not being able to marry the person you've loved for 50 years.

I think the problem with the "pro-civil-union, anti-marriage" people is that they confuse "grudging compromise to avoid a bloodbath" with "treating people equally."

It is doing the minimum necessary to appease the other party, without actually giving them anything.

When I hear someone say, "I think gays should be able to get married, but I still think they are disgusting and perverted people and I wouldn't let them near my children," I am not being treated as an equal, or with respect. I am being attacked; I am being victimized. Saying that qualifies as "equal treatment" just serves to turn the iron in the wound.

But don't you see? Gays do have the same rights as straights! We're all equally legally allowed to marry people of the opposite gender! Duh!

Personally, I think it's a little like a vegetarian saying "Oh I love little animals! I could never eat them! Oh hey, look at these gorgeous new leather shoes I just bought!"

I've tried about 10 times to write a thoughtful reply to this, but I've failed every time; it keeps turning into a tirade against society and how different people have radically different ideas about what it means for gays to receive equal treatment.

So I will just say this: if you like, I'll have my Mom straighten her out for you. She will do that. Oh yes. Parents must support their kids completely, and be cheerleaders for them. Otherwise, who will pay for your plastic surgery when you're 65?

Aughhh I'm sorry you had to deal with that, NOT FUN >:(.

And it's not that just because it's available means you have to do it RIGHT AWAY, you're totally right that it's just all about the principal of us having the same rights as a heterosexual couple. It is like a double standard :\.

BUT YES, BE HAPPY!!! I look forward to seeing you guys at Fanime, yayyy :D :D (and let me know when you arrive there and stuff. I'm still staying with you guys, right?)

Aww sweetie... I'm so sorry your Mom is like this.

It IS a double standard, but Christianity is ALL about the double-standards, so it makes sense. Love thy neighbor as long as they're exactly like you and agree with you on everything, and all.

But I don't get it... she should be happy that there is a chance you won't have premarital sex anymore! You know how crazy Christians get about premarital sex...
