A bad morning, c. 6000 BCE

Do you ever wish you could trade in those modern problems and annoyances, and live in the past, when things were simpler? Or were they ( Read more... )

Sorry you're having a frustrating morning!

I like your neolithic comparison, but there's one thing you're missing: A couple of children (you would probably have given birth to others that died) clinging to you and requiring your care. Luckily by the time they're five you can put them to work making things and tending the fire and cooking, but until then they're just mouths to feed.

It really does put things in perspective to think about daily life in terms of how it would have been for cavemen...I would never have been born, because they couldn't do C-sections, and my Mom probably would have died in labor. Barring that, I would be too near-sighted to survive past ten years old. Not to mention all my allergies...LOL This is making me glad I was born in the 20th century!

Re: the lack of offspring -- yes, you are absolutely right, and I did that deliberately. This entry was inspired by Reindeer Moon, about a young neolithic girl who lives alone for part of the book. And when I was a girl myself, Island of the Blue Dolphins and Julie of the Wolves, both of which have similar themes, were favorites. I spent probably too much time when I was a kid pretending to be a young neolithic girl.

I was so nearsighted I would have died young, then, too. If I had survived I probably would have died in childbirth. Makes you glad we live now, huh?

I'm always thankful I was born with 20th century conveniences and mindsets. In particular, I was born with an extra finger. Had I been born back then, I'd have probably been considered a scary witch (oh, wait...). :)

haha, I dunno...maybe they would have considered you special and blessed and you would have become a local celebrity like that girl in India with the extra arms. Really depends upon the culture.

Due to asthma sometimes I think I wouldn't have made it, however, I also think that differences in diet and lifestyle might have contributed to me having a different constitution than I have.
I'm not sure that c-sections may not have always been possible, but they probably were a lot sooner than we think. Afterall, the Ancient Edgyptians did brain surgeries, and some of those people survived. I've had one c-section and probably will have another, but if I lived in ancient times I probably wouldn't have gotten preeclampsia because I would probably be thinner due to working in fields or farms, and I would probably not eat nearly as much salt, possibly nullifying the need for a c-section.
I like to think about this stuff!
