My Birthday

Dec 05, 2003 10:30

Today is my birthday. I am 38 years old. A month ago that sounded old and strange, but I've been saying "thirty-eight" to myself for several weeks now, and I like it. It sounds round and solid. The feel of it in my mouth is like poetry ( Read more... )

Happy birthday! I'm a young-looking person too. People keep telling me I'll love it when I'm older, so it's good to hear that you're loving it. Although...how's that hidden portrait looking? ;)

I'm starting to look forward to buying wine on the day I turn 40, getting carded, and then telling them to look closely at the date. Hee!

Portraits: argh! I still haven't gotten my friend over to take pictures. I'll have to rope her into it soon. I do have a decent candid from this summer's ren faire, though. I'll see about posting it tonight.

Oh, your're referring to Dorian Gray, arent' you? I totally need to read that.

Well, I'm a total fraud, because I've never read it either.

You make me feel so special!

Though I love the air of mystery, I also love my real name.

It is Sydney :)

Sydney! Oh, I love that name for you! <3

For some reason I feel so protective of you - big-sisterish, y'know? So it was getting weird that I didn't know your name.

Where does 'duriyah' come from? what does it mean, etc...

I do love the name Sydney for me. In its sibbilant femininity, its unconventionality, and its androgyny. If my parents knew what they were setting in motion, they would have given me a more conventional name! Ha!

For some reason I feel so protective of you - big-sisterish, y'know?

Aw, that is so sweet and lovely! I'm flattered and grateful. I don't have any sisters, so that's great.

Duriyah is my dance name. It's Arabic and means bright, shining. I put a lot of store in names, so when I was searching for a dance name I wanted one that I could live up to. I'm a day person, and feel attracted to the sun and stars. (My shamanic name, which I also use for my email, is Sundance). So I picked Duriyah from a short list of names having to do with shining or light.

A ring? Nah, you've got a portrait stashed up in the attic, thats the trick! :>

Happy Birthday and yay for tantric, prana and finally looking older than 12 at least ::grin::

Thank you! Yes, I'm glad I at least look like an adult now! Hee!

I haven't read Dorian Gray, but I think that the portrait gets older looking and he gets younger looking? (I really must read that book) That makes more sense than the One Ring, which just slows aging, as well as doing lots of other nasty things.

:)

Actually in the book, I don't think he gets to look any younger, he doesn't age much though and all the evil twisted things in life that he gets up to have no visible effect on his face and body, but his hidden portrait shows the ravages of the worst kind of sins and depravity. So, face of an angel, soul of a devil and you'd never guess from looking into his baby-blues, kind of thing..

Er, not that I was suggesting you were quite that far gone :>

Ok, I thought there was some dark/evil aspect to the book. Now I'm curious and I must read it.

And no, I'm sure you didn't think I was all twisted and such. Well, maybe a little ;)

Thank you!

We have lots of December people here at work, too. It's a good month to be born in :)

I also know several other people who seem to look younger than their years. I tend not to try guessing people's ages anymore, especially on their looks. The maturity level and experiences of the person are much more important, I think.
