More nattering about the Honda Fit: The one I bought is a sport model, with the power package. It even has power adjusters for the side mirrors, which is really nice, and something my Jeep Cherokee doesn't have. It plays mp3 CD's and has a port for an auxiliary player (like a tape player or mp3 player ( Read more... )

You know, I've never even heard of a Honda Fit. Is that a new model?

One of the things to watch out for with Honda, especially going from your Jeep to one of these little things is that newer Hondas are light. My old '93 Mazda Protege and the 2001 Civic are basically the same car, but there has to be at least a couple hundred pounds weight difference between them. I had to stay overnight somewhere near Plain City one of the last times I went between Dayton and Columbus because the wind was gusting somewhere around twenty miles an hour and it just wasn't safe to have the Civic out on the freeway in that.

Nice little car, gets great gas mileage, but apparently the people who design these things weren't expecting anyone to drive them where there is weather.

Yes, it's new. It was introduced in the US in 2008. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Honda_Fit

Because of its higher profile and boxy shape, the Cherokee doesn't do all that well in wind, either. But I'll keep that in mind and be careful on windy days. The Jeep is also quite a bit heavier than the Honda.

I know I'm going to miss the high wheel base the first time I bottom out on the Fit. I sure won't miss the lousy way the Cherokee corners, though.

Cute!

It isn't just wind; the Civic is terrible in ice and snow, too. I nearly didn't make it back from over near Wright-Patt back up to northwest of the city in the last really bad snowstorm we had because the stupid thing was too light to get any traction. But the Fit looks like it's at least heavier than the Civic, so you might not have as much trouble with yours.

Uh, I'm a dork. It was introduced in 2006, NOT 2008. Duh.

Good for you about donating your Jeep! I want to donate my van, but I know I'll need the trade-in money if I want to get another car. Oh, how I long for a change. :)

The decision is pretty easy since it’s such a high mileage vehicle. I wouldn’t get much at all for a trade-in. Plus I want to hold on to it for as long as possible, since the cargo area comes in handy for hauling stuff.

Ooooh....I'm super-jealous. I have a Civic but have been lusting over the Fit since it appeared. Unfortunately, I drive so little that a new car is a pretty pointless expense for me, so I will live vicariously through others who have bought it (you're the second person on my friends list who has gotten one this month!)

Thanks! I wouldn't be buying a car now if mine weren't falling apart. And just think...by the time you are ready to buy a car there will be more used Fits available so you can get one cheap!

By the time I am ready to buy a car, I'll also probably be too elderly to drive it. :)

Seriously, I have an 8 year old civic with 60,000 miles on it, and am now down to the point where I'm only putting a few hundred a year on it. I'm weird. :)

I'm envious of you! I love living in the country but I drive way too much. I miss being able to take the bus everywhere.

If I were to get a new car, I would get a Fit. I like the fact that the seats fold down in to the floor and you can set them up in lots of different configurations.

I know! That's a great feature.
