My grandmother is on her deathbed.

My brother called me yesterday to let me know that my grandmother is dying. She has been aspirating fluids for a few weeks, and she finds it hard to swallow food. She has stopped eating and she's very weak. My bother hadn't seen her, but I also talked with my father and cousin, who had. The people at the care facility where she lives are ( Read more... )

It's amazing how people can hold on.

My grandfather, at 90, held on in the hospital for an additional day so that my cousins had time to make it down to see him. He died shortly after they arrived. Even though some of us didn't get to speak with him, we know he could hear us and it was wonderful to have that final day with him.

She'll know you're there. It'll be okay.

My heart and sympathies go out to you in your reaching out to your grandmother. Together with a sister, I took care of my mother for eight years in her home during her long, slow glide through Alzheimer's. In those early years when she could still speak, she wouldn't believe she had ever had any children, and there are four of us. My hunch is that if you convey what you want to say through touch and your hands, you will say all that can be said and more than any words could convey.
